ADS-TEC Energy Advances 1 GW Battery Storage Project in Germany
ADS-TEC Energy PLC (NASDAQ: ADSE), a provider of battery-based energy storage and fast-charging solutions, has reached a milestone in developing its large-scale battery storage project at the Pulverdingen substation in Markgröningen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The permitting authority has confirmed that all application documents are complete, and the building permit is expected shortly.
The facility is planned to provide approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) of power output and 4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage capacity. If completed as planned, it would rank among Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems and help strengthen the region’s electricity infrastructure as renewable generation expands.
A Battery Plant on Power-Plant Scale
One gigawatt is comparable to the output of a large coal-fired or nuclear power station, or roughly 250 wind turbines. The battery system is designed to deliver that level of power for about four hours. Its stored energy would equal the daily electricity consumption of around 400,000 single-family homes or 800,000 apartments.
Potential Long-Term Value for ADS-TEC Energy
From 2029, the project could contribute to ADS-TEC Energy’s business in three ways: deployment of its proprietary battery management technology, technical services throughout the facility’s operating life, and a continuing ownership interest in the project company.
Third-party market data indicates that large battery storage systems in Germany have recently generated approximately EUR 150,000 to EUR 250,000 per megawatt annually from wholesale electricity trading and balancing markets. ADS-TEC Energy’s eventual share will depend on the investor process, final partnership structure and future market conditions. The company stressed that these figures are illustrative market data, not a revenue forecast or financial guidance.
A Regional Project with National Significance
Thomas Speidel, founder and chief executive officer of ADS-TEC Energy, said the project reflects years of preparation and cooperation among the company, local stakeholders and infrastructure partners.
“A project of this size requires staying power,” Speidel said, adding that he was proud the facility could be built in Markgröningen and of the team that had prepared it over several years.
He said ADS-TEC Energy and its European partners aim to show that Europe can plan, build and operate critical energy infrastructure at this scale.
European Suppliers and Proprietary Technology
ADS-TEC Energy says it has developed the project with European partners from the outset. Established German companies and major industrial suppliers are ready to provide equipment including batteries, electrical switchgear, transformers and extra-high-voltage components.
The batteries are expected to use ADS-TEC Energy’s proprietary battery management systems. This expertise can reduce dependence on external battery management suppliers, many of which are based in Asia, while supporting local control over software, IT security and associated data.
Supporting Renewable Electricity and Grid Stability
Battery storage plants do not generate electricity. They store power when supply is abundant and release it when the grid needs it. The Pulverdingen facility is intended to absorb excess electricity during periods of high generation, such as sunny midday hours or strong winds, and respond within fractions of a second when supply tightens.
It could stabilize grid frequency, absorb peak loads and support restoration of the electricity system after an outage.
Surplus wind and solar generation is sometimes curtailed or exported at negative prices, while electricity can become scarce only hours later. Storage can shift some excess energy into periods when demand is higher or renewable output is lower. This could ease pressure on the grid, reduce the need for certain grid interventions and contribute to a more resilient electricity supply in Baden-Württemberg.
Meeting Demand for Flexibility
The need for flexible electricity infrastructure is growing. Wind and solar output varies with weather and time of day, while demand is changing as electric vehicles, heat pumps and data centers become more widespread.
Large-scale battery systems can bridge part of the gap between variable generation and changing demand. By responding rapidly and shifting electricity across time, they can contribute to grid reliability as homes, businesses and industry become more dependent on electricity.
Development, Financing and Future Operation
In addition to developing and building the plant, ADS-TEC Energy expects to provide technical services to help maintain reliability and availability throughout its operating life. The plant is planned to operate primarily with partners from the European energy sector.
ADS-TEC Energy believes its in-house hardware and software expertise will help it adapt to changing market requirements and new business models.
The company is negotiating with potential investors and strategic partners. The building permit is a key prerequisite for completing financing and partnership agreements. Although ADS-TEC Energy prefers a partner from the European energy sector, it is also discussing the project with established international infrastructure investors.
