Iberdrola Wins Seven Awards in Brazil’s Power Sector

Iberdrola Strengthens Leadership in Brazil’s Electricity Sector with Seven Abradee Awards

Iberdrola has further strengthened its position as a leading player in Brazil’s electricity sector after its subsidiary Neoenergia secured seven awards at the 2026 Abradee Awards. The company received seven prizes from 11 nominations, including the most prestigious national recognition presented by the Brazilian Association of Electricity Distribution Companies (Abradee).

The latest results underline Neoenergia’s strong performance across several areas of Brazil’s electricity distribution industry, including operational management, innovation, economic performance, service quality and regional leadership.

One of the most significant achievements came from Neoenergia Cosern, which was named Brazil’s best electricity distribution company for the second consecutive year. Neoenergia Elektro also performed strongly, taking second place in the national ranking.

The awards demonstrated the breadth of Neoenergia’s performance across its distribution businesses. The Group’s companies were the only finalists in both the Management Quality and Innovation Management categories. Neoenergia Elektro won both awards, highlighting its performance in developing efficient management practices and implementing innovative solutions across its operations.

Strong Regional Performance

Neoenergia’s success extended beyond the national awards, with several of its distribution companies receiving recognition as regional leaders.

Neoenergia Cosern was named the best distribution company in Brazil’s Northeast region, reinforcing its position as a leading utility in the area. Neoenergia Elektro received the award for the Southeast region, while Neoenergia Brasília was recognised as the best distribution company in the North-Central West region.

Neoenergia Cosern also achieved another major result by taking first place in the Economic and Financial Management category. The award recognises the company’s performance in managing financial and economic activities while maintaining the efficiency and reliability expected from a major electricity distributor.

Taken together, the seven awards demonstrate the scale of Neoenergia’s performance across different aspects of the electricity distribution business. They also reinforce Iberdrola’s growing presence in Brazil’s energy market and the importance of its local subsidiary to the Group’s strategy in the country.

Major Investment Programme

The recognition comes as Iberdrola accelerates investment in Brazil through Neoenergia. The company has announced plans to invest 50 billion Brazilian reais between 2026 and 2030, equivalent to close to €9 billion, to expand, modernise and digitalise electricity networks across the concession areas served by its distribution companies.

The investment programme covers five distribution businesses: Neoenergia Coelba in Bahia, Neoenergia Pernambuco, Neoenergia Elektro in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, Neoenergia Cosern in Rio Grande do Norte, and Neoenergia Brasília in the Federal District.

A significant portion of the planned investment will be directed toward expanding electricity infrastructure. This expansion is expected to help meet rising electricity demand while supporting the broader electrification of Brazil’s economy.

The company expects electricity consumption to continue increasing as more sectors move toward electrification. Greater adoption of electric technologies across transport, industry, buildings and other areas will require stronger and more flexible distribution networks capable of handling additional demand.

Almost half of Neoenergia’s planned investment between 2026 and 2030 will therefore focus on expanding electricity infrastructure. The remainder will support the digitalisation of networks, improvements in electricity supply quality, greater system resilience and efforts to reduce technical and commercial losses.

Focus on Modernising Electricity Networks

For Iberdrola and Neoenergia, investment in electricity networks is becoming increasingly important as Brazil’s energy system evolves. Distribution infrastructure plays a central role in connecting customers to electricity and ensuring that power can be delivered reliably as demand changes.

Digitalisation is also expected to play a major role in Neoenergia’s investment strategy. Modern digital technologies can help distribution companies monitor network conditions, identify problems more quickly, improve operational efficiency and provide customers with better services.

Strengthening network resilience is another key priority. Electricity systems must increasingly be able to withstand extreme weather events, changes in demand and other operational challenges. Investment in infrastructure and digital tools can help utilities improve reliability and reduce the impact of disruptions.

The company’s plans also include efforts to reduce losses across its networks. Improving network efficiency can help utilities make better use of existing infrastructure while supporting the long-term reliability and sustainability of electricity supply.

Significant Infrastructure Investor

Neoenergia’s investment activity has already made it one of the most important private infrastructure investors in Brazil.

According to the Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Basic Industries (Abdib), Neoenergia was the private company that invested the most in infrastructure in Brazil over the four years preceding the 2026 awards.

In 2025 alone, Neoenergia invested 10.1 billion reais, equivalent to approximately €1.7 billion. Most of this investment was directed toward its electricity distribution operations.

The level of investment reflects the strategic importance of Brazil to Iberdrola’s international business. By expanding and upgrading its distribution infrastructure, Neoenergia is positioning itself to support future electricity demand while improving the performance and resilience of its existing networks.

Broad Energy Presence in Brazil

Neoenergia has a substantial presence across Brazil’s energy sector. The company operates in 18 states and the Federal District and has activities spanning electricity generation, transmission, distribution and retail.

Its five distribution companies collectively serve approximately 17 million customers, representing a population of nearly 40 million people. This extensive customer base gives Neoenergia a significant role in Brazil’s electricity system and makes the performance of its distribution networks important to millions of consumers.

Beyond distribution, Neoenergia has approximately 4,200 MW of installed generation capacity and operates more than 8,000 kilometres of transmission lines.

The combination of generation, transmission and distribution activities provides the company with a broad presence across Brazil’s electricity value chain. Its distribution operations, however, remain a central part of its infrastructure strategy and investment programme.

Continuing Abradee Recognition

The 2026 Abradee Awards continue a strong track record for Neoenergia. The company achieved a similar result at the previous edition of the awards, receiving seven awards along with an honourable mention in 2025.

At the 2025 awards, Neoenergia Cosern was named Brazil’s best distribution company and also received recognition as the leading distributor in the Northeast. The company additionally received an honourable mention in Health and Safety.

Neoenergia Brasília won first place in the Performance Evolution category, while Neoenergia Elektro was recognised as the best distribution company in the Southeast. Elektro also received awards for Management Quality, Innovation Management and Operational Management.

The continued recognition across multiple categories suggests that Neoenergia’s performance is not limited to a single area of its operations. Instead, the company has established a broad record of achievement covering management, innovation, operational performance and regional service.

The Abradee Awards are widely regarded as an important benchmark for Brazil’s electricity distribution industry. Organised by the Brazilian Association of Electricity Distribution Companies, the awards recognise utilities that demonstrate strong performance in areas such as service quality, innovation, management and customer service.

For Iberdrola, Neoenergia’s seven awards in 2026 provide further evidence of the subsidiary’s position within Brazil’s electricity market. Combined with the planned 50 billion reais investment programme through 2030, the results point to a strategy focused on expanding infrastructure, improving network performance and preparing Brazil’s electricity system for growing demand and greater electrification.

As Neoenergia continues to invest across its five distribution companies, Iberdrola is strengthening its long-term commitment to Brazil and positioning its subsidiary to play a larger role in the country’s evolving energy landscape.
