Iberdrola Strengthens Operations at 15 UK Wind Farms
ScottishPower Renewables, the UK renewable energy subsidiary of Iberdrola Group, has signed a five-year agreement with RES, a company specialising in renewable energy, to strengthen the operation and maintenance of 15 onshore wind farms across the United Kingdom.
The agreement represents another step in the development of the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure, supporting the reliable operation of a substantial portfolio of onshore wind assets. The 15 wind farms covered by the contract have a combined installed capacity of 588 MW, helping provide low-carbon electricity to hundreds of thousands of households while contributing to the country’s wider energy transition.
Under the agreement, RES will support the operation and maintenance of the wind farms, with a focus on maintaining their performance, availability and efficiency. Effective maintenance is critical to ensuring that renewable energy assets continue generating electricity safely and consistently throughout their operational lifetimes.
The portfolio includes Harestanes, one of Scotland’s largest onshore wind farms. The facilities included in the agreement collectively represent an important part of ScottishPower Renewables’ onshore generation portfolio and will continue to contribute to the UK’s growing supply of renewable electricity.
According to RES data, the combined capacity of the 15 wind farms is sufficient to meet the equivalent annual electricity consumption of approximately 412,000 households. Their continued operation therefore has an important role in supplying clean electricity while reducing reliance on higher-carbon generation sources.
The five-year agreement also has an employment and supply-chain dimension. RES and ScottishPower Renewables expect the contract to support skilled employment and strengthen the network of companies and professionals involved in the UK’s renewable energy sector.
As part of the arrangement, 32 new jobs will be created. These positions will add to the workforce supporting the operation and maintenance of wind energy facilities and will contribute to the development of specialist technical skills within the renewable energy industry.
The agreement is also expected to benefit a broader group of suppliers, contractors and technical specialists. Wind farm operation and maintenance requires expertise across a range of areas, including electrical systems, mechanical equipment, inspections, asset management, safety and performance monitoring. Maintaining a strong network of skilled workers and service providers is therefore essential as the UK’s installed renewable generation capacity continues to expand.
For ScottishPower Renewables, the partnership forms part of a wider strategy to maximise the performance and availability of its renewable assets. Wind farms represent long-term infrastructure investments, and effective operation and maintenance can help extend asset life, improve reliability and ensure that available generating capacity is used efficiently.
The agreement comes as electricity demand is expected to increase as economies and industries become increasingly electrified. The expansion of electric vehicles, heat pumps, industrial electrification and other technologies is contributing to greater demand for electricity. At the same time, governments and energy companies are working to increase renewable generation and reduce emissions from the power sector.
Onshore wind remains an important component of this transition because wind farms can generate electricity without directly producing carbon emissions during operation. Maximising the performance of existing wind farms can therefore complement the development of new renewable projects.
The partnership between ScottishPower Renewables and RES also highlights the growing importance of specialist service providers in the renewable energy industry. As the UK’s wind fleet becomes larger and more mature, operators require experienced technical partners capable of managing increasingly complex assets and maintaining high standards of safety and performance.
RES specialises in renewable energy services and has experience supporting wind farms and other clean energy assets. Its involvement in the 15 ScottishPower Renewables sites is expected to provide additional operational expertise while supporting the long-term performance of the portfolio.
The agreement further demonstrates how collaboration across the renewable energy value chain can support the UK’s clean energy ambitions. Developers and asset owners require a wide range of partners beyond the initial construction of a wind farm, including engineering companies, maintenance specialists, equipment suppliers and technical service providers.
For local communities and the wider UK economy, investment in wind farm operations can also create opportunities beyond electricity generation. New technical positions and contracts for suppliers can help develop regional skills and maintain economic activity around renewable energy projects.
The creation of 32 new jobs under the agreement is particularly significant as the renewable energy sector continues to require a growing pool of engineers, technicians and other skilled professionals. Developing this workforce will be increasingly important as the country expands renewable generation and modernises its electricity system.
The partnership also supports Iberdrola Group’s broader focus on renewable energy and electrification. Through ScottishPower Renewables, the company has established a significant presence in the UK’s clean energy market and continues to invest in renewable generation and related infrastructure.
By focusing on the efficient operation of existing assets alongside the development of new projects, renewable energy companies can increase the contribution of installed capacity to the electricity system. Maintaining high levels of availability means that more of the electricity that wind farms are capable of producing can reach consumers.
The five-year agreement with RES therefore combines operational, economic and energy-transition objectives. It will support the maintenance of 15 onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 588 MW, help sustain clean electricity generation equivalent to the annual consumption of around 412,000 households, and create 32 new employment opportunities.
The collaboration ultimately reinforces the importance of long-term partnerships in building a reliable renewable energy sector. As the UK’s electricity system continues moving towards greater electrification and lower carbon emissions, ensuring that existing wind farms operate safely, efficiently and consistently will remain an important part of achieving the country’s energy transition goals.
For ScottishPower Renewables and Iberdrola, the agreement represents a continued commitment to improving the performance and availability of renewable assets. For RES, it expands its role in supporting the operation of the UK’s onshore wind fleet. Together, the companies will help ensure that the 15 wind farms continue contributing renewable electricity while strengthening the skilled workforce and supply chain required to support the country’s expanding clean energy industry.
