
Georgia Power’s OpenAI Agreement Wins Approval as Large-Load Growth Drives Customer Savings
Georgia Power has received regulatory approval for its agreement to provide electricity service to OpenAI’s planned project in Effingham County, marking another major development in the company’s strategy for managing rapid growth in electricity demand across Georgia. The approval, completed through the regulatory process involving the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC), comes as the state experiences increasing interest from large-load customers, including data centers and major industrial facilities.
Georgia Power said the newly approved agreement is expected to contribute to significant financial benefits for existing customers. Based on projects announced so far and anticipated future growth, the company expects the typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month to see savings of at least $15 per month beginning in 2029. The projected benefit represents annual savings of approximately $180 for a typical household.
The latest forecast increases the customer savings previously outlined by Georgia Power. In December 2025, the company committed to delivering approximately $102 in annual savings for a typical residential customer beginning in 2029. With additional large-load projects and projected incremental revenue now included in the company’s outlook, the anticipated annual savings have risen to $180.
Georgia Power estimates that revenue from new large-load customers could generate approximately $950 million in annual savings for customers. Over the three-year period from 2029 through 2031, those benefits are projected to reach approximately $2.847 billion.
The company’s approach is based on the idea that substantial new electricity demand can support existing customers when large energy users are required to cover the costs associated with the infrastructure needed to serve their facilities. OpenAI Project Adds 3,200 MW of New Electricity Demand

The objective is to convert the economic and infrastructure benefits associated with large new electricity customers into lower costs and improved reliability for Georgia Power’s broader customer base.

“We know every dollar counts, and we know that in many parts of the country growth is pushing electric rates up,” Greene said. “That is not happening in Georgia.”
Greene noted that Georgia Power’s earlier commitment called for annual savings of $102 for the typical household beginning in 2029, while the latest projection has increased that expected benefit to $180 annually.
She also credited the continued involvement of the Georgia Public Service Commission and its staff in reviewing the agreements and establishing protections intended to ensure that the benefits of economic growth extend to Georgia Power customers.
Large-Load Customers Become an Increasingly Important Part of Georgia’s Energy Landscape
