
Energy Recovery Secures Key Role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 Desalination Project

Under the new contract, Energy Recovery will provide its industry-leading PX Pressure Exchanger devices for use in the plant’s reverse osmosis process.
Reverse osmosis desalination involves forcing seawater through semi-permeable membranes under extremely high pressure to separate salts and impurities from water. While highly effective, this process can also be energy intensive and costly if advanced energy recovery systems are not utilized.
Energy Recovery’s PX technology addresses this challenge by capturing and reusing hydraulic energy that would otherwise be lost during the desalination process. The devices transfer pressure energy from the concentrated brine stream directly to incoming seawater, significantly reducing the amount of energy required by high-pressure pumps.
The company’s PX devices are capable of achieving efficiency levels of up to 99 percent, making them among the most effective energy recovery technologies available in the global desalination market.
According to Energy Recovery, deployment of PX technology can reduce energy consumption in seawater reverse osmosis facilities by as much as 60 percent. Lower energy usage translates into reduced operating costs, improved plant economics, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Another major advantage of the technology is its reliability. The PX device contains only a single moving part and is designed for a service life of approximately 30 years. This durability reduces maintenance requirements and contributes to long-term operational stability for large desalination facilities.
