Edison International Awards 2026 Lineworker Scholarships to Support Next Generation of Grid Workers
Edison International has announced the recipients of its 2026 Lineworker Scholarship program, awarding financial support to 10 aspiring utility professionals as part of its ongoing commitment to workforce development in the energy sector. Each scholarship recipient will receive up to $25,000 to pursue education and training that prepares them for careers in the electric utility industry.
The announcement was made in conjunction with National Lineworker Appreciation Day, an annual observance that recognizes the dedication and contributions of more than 100,000 lineworkers across the United States. These skilled professionals play a vital role in maintaining, repairing and restoring the nation’s electric infrastructure, often working under challenging and hazardous conditions to ensure reliable power delivery to homes, businesses and critical facilities.
As the electric industry undergoes rapid transformation driven by grid modernization, electrification and growing energy demand, utilities are increasingly focused on building a strong pipeline of qualified workers. Edison International’s scholarship initiative is designed to help address this need by supporting students who aspire to enter one of the industry’s most essential professions.
Addressing the Growing Demand for Skilled Utility Workers
Electric utilities across the United States are facing a significant workforce challenge. Aging infrastructure, increasing renewable energy integration, expanding transmission networks and a wave of retirements among experienced workers are creating a growing demand for trained lineworkers and other skilled trades professionals.
Orville Cocking, Senior Vice President of Transmission and Distribution at Southern California Edison (SCE), emphasized the importance of lineworkers in ensuring energy reliability and grid resilience.
“Lineworkers are the backbone of a reliable, resilient grid and they keep the power flowing to our homes, businesses and communities each day,” Cocking said. “As energy demand increases, so will the need for qualified, safety-focused field crews. The Lineworker Scholarship was created to help prepare the next generation of skilled trade workers for success in the electric industry.”
Lineworkers are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing power lines and associated electrical equipment. Their work is critical during emergencies such as wildfires, storms, earthquakes and other natural disasters, when rapid restoration of power can significantly affect public safety and economic activity.
With California and other states pursuing ambitious clean energy targets, the need for a highly trained utility workforce is expected to become even more pronounced in the coming years.
Scholarship Supports Education and Career Development
The Edison International Lineworker Scholarship program is funded through contributions from Edison International shareholders in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 47.
The scholarship covers expenses associated with enrollment in the Powerline Worker: Pole Climbing Certificate program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC), one of California’s leading institutions for utility workforce training. The specialized program provides students with hands-on experience and technical instruction needed to pursue careers in the electric power sector.
In addition to tuition and training costs, scholarship funds may be used to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL), a critical requirement for many utility field positions. Financial assistance may also cover housing, transportation and childcare expenses, helping students overcome barriers that might otherwise limit access to career opportunities.
By addressing both educational and personal financial needs, the scholarship aims to ensure participants can fully focus on their studies and successfully complete the program.
Upon graduation, scholarship recipients who earn their CDL and satisfy all pre-employment requirements become eligible for full-time, entry-level skilled trade positions with Southern California Edison. This direct pathway from education to employment represents one of the key strengths of the initiative, creating opportunities for students while helping utilities build a reliable talent pipeline.
Partnership with Los Angeles Trade-Technical College
The collaboration between Edison International and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College has become an important component of California’s efforts to prepare workers for careers in the energy and utility industries.
William Elarton-Selig, Chairman of LATTC’s Construction, Maintenance and Utilities Pathway, highlighted the significance of the partnership and its impact on students.
“Since launching the lineworker program at LATTC, our goal has been to provide students with access to world-class training that leads directly to meaningful careers in the utility industry,” Elarton-Selig said.
He noted that financial challenges often prevent many students from completing educational programs or pursuing technical careers. The scholarship program is intended to remove these obstacles and provide greater access to high-quality workforce training.
“The Lineworker Scholarship expands those opportunities by helping students overcome financial barriers and remain focused on their education,” he added. “Together, LATTC and Edison International are helping develop the skilled workforce that will build, maintain and strengthen California’s electrical infrastructure for decades to come.”
The partnership demonstrates how utilities, educational institutions and labor organizations can work together to address workforce shortages while creating long-term economic opportunities for communities.
Supporting California’s Energy Transition
California’s energy landscape is undergoing significant transformation as the state pursues aggressive decarbonization goals, increased renewable energy deployment and widespread electrification initiatives.
The expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure, battery storage systems and renewable power generation requires substantial investments in transmission and distribution networks. Modernizing and strengthening the grid will depend heavily on the availability of skilled lineworkers and other utility professionals capable of managing increasingly complex infrastructure.
As utilities invest billions of dollars in grid resilience and clean energy projects, workforce development has become a strategic priority. Programs such as Edison International’s Lineworker Scholarship help ensure that a sufficient number of trained professionals are available to support these initiatives.
Industry experts have repeatedly emphasized that the energy transition is not only a technological transformation but also a workforce transformation. Building the future grid will require thousands of additional workers with specialized technical skills and strong safety training.
Positive Employment Outlook for Lineworkers
The long-term employment outlook for lineworkers remains strong. According to projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for electrical power-line installers and repairers is expected to grow by approximately 7% between 2024 and 2034.
The agency also estimates that more than 10,000 job openings for lineworkers and related occupations will emerge annually during this period, driven by industry expansion and replacement needs resulting from retirements and workforce turnover.
These projections underscore the importance of initiatives that encourage new entrants into the profession and provide them with access to affordable training and career pathways.
Edison International’s scholarship program reflects a broader commitment to workforce development and community investment. By supporting aspiring lineworkers today, the company is helping prepare the skilled professionals who will maintain and strengthen the nation’s electric infrastructure in the decades ahead.
As energy demand continues to rise and the power grid evolves, the contributions of lineworkers will remain indispensable. Through educational partnerships and targeted financial support, Edison International and its partners are investing in the next generation of utility professionals who will play a critical role in ensuring reliable, resilient and sustainable electricity systems for communities across California and beyond.
