ComEd Restores Power to Over 95% of Customers Affected by Major Storm System

ComEd has restored power to over 410,000 of the more than 430,000 customers impacted by Monday’s severe storm system, which has been described as potentially one of the worst since the August 2020 derecho. Without recent system upgrades, the outages could have been twice as severe.

As of 10 a.m. today, fewer than 16,000 customers are still without power. ComEd crews, with help from utility partners, are working non-stop to restore power to the remaining customers. The company expects to have 99% of customers back online by the end of the day, with the remaining 0.1% anticipated to be restored by the end of the day Friday.

“We understand the frustration caused by prolonged outages,” said Dave Perez, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ComEd. “Our crews are working tirelessly to restore service as quickly and safely as possible. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this unprecedented storm.”

The storm produced at least 10 tornadoes, a number that may rise as the National Weather Service continues its damage assessment.

ComEd is working closely with community leaders and local agencies to expedite repairs. Priority has been given to restoring power to critical services like hospitals and emergency services, followed by repairs to infrastructure and areas with the most significant damage.

In response to increasing severe weather events, ComEd has invested in power grid enhancements over recent years. These upgrades have improved system reliability by 70%, preventing over 21.7 million outages and saving more than $3.3 billion in outage-related costs.
