Cadeler Strengthens Offshore Wind Foundation Installation Capabilities With Menck Acquisition
Cadeler A/S, a leading offshore wind installation contractor and operator of one of the industry’s largest fleets of jack-up wind installation vessels, has completed the strategic acquisition of Menck, a global specialist in foundation installation equipment and technology for offshore projects. The transaction represents a major expansion of Cadeler’s capabilities in offshore foundation transportation and installation (T&I), while supporting the company’s long-term ambition to become a preferred installation partner for the global offshore wind industry.
The acquisition was completed after all mandatory regulatory approvals were received. It is based on an agreed enterprise valuation of approximately EUR 501 million. Cadeler intends to maintain Menck as a standalone business, allowing the company to retain its independent market position, established customer relationships and specialist expertise while becoming part of a broader offshore wind platform.
The deal brings together two businesses with complementary capabilities. Menck contributes more than 150 years of engineering experience, specialist foundation installation equipment and extensive technical knowledge, while Cadeler provides heavy-lift offshore installation vessels, project execution capabilities and long-standing relationships across the renewable energy sector. Together, the businesses are positioned to offer customers a broader range of services across the offshore wind foundation installation value chain.
Expanding Foundation Installation Capabilities
The offshore wind industry is moving toward increasingly large turbines and foundations, creating greater technical and logistical challenges for developers and contractors. As turbine dimensions, foundation weights and water depths increase, installation companies require more specialised equipment, engineering expertise and project coordination capabilities.
The acquisition of Menck gives Cadeler greater control over critical foundation installation resources and strengthens its ability to support increasingly complex offshore wind projects. Menck’s expertise includes hydraulic impact hammers, noise mitigation systems, drilling, grouting, specialist lifting and handling equipment and other technologies used during foundation installation.
Menck also brings a substantial knowledge base from previous foundation installation projects. Its experience includes more than 50 million data points related to driven piles, providing valuable technical information that can support engineering, planning and execution of future projects.
Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler, said that offshore wind projects are becoming larger and more technically complex, making dependable execution increasingly important. He highlighted Menck’s long-standing reputation, engineering expertise and experience in mission-critical foundation installation equipment as important strengths that complement Cadeler’s offshore installation capabilities.
By combining these capabilities, Cadeler expects to provide customers with greater support throughout the installation process and improve its ability to respond to the technical requirements of next-generation offshore wind farms.
Menck to Maintain Independent Market Position
Despite becoming part of the Cadeler group, Menck is expected to continue operating as a standalone business. This approach reflects the strategic importance of Menck’s existing customer relationships and its role as an equipment and technology supplier to the wider offshore wind market.
Menck will continue serving offshore wind customers, including other installation contractors. Maintaining its independent commercial position is intended to ensure that customers throughout the industry can continue to access Menck’s equipment and specialist services.
Cadeler views Menck’s established organisation, experienced workforce and technical knowledge as important assets. Rather than integrating the business completely into its own operations, Cadeler plans to invest in Menck while preserving the company’s existing market identity and operating expertise.
Gleerup said the objective is to build on Menck’s existing strengths while providing additional financial and strategic support for future growth. The companies believe this approach can create a stronger platform for expansion while contributing to a more resilient offshore wind supply chain.
More Than 150 Years of Engineering Experience
Menck has developed its market position through more than 150 years of engineering activity. The company is recognised for its specialist technology and equipment used in fixed-bottom offshore foundation installation.
Its portfolio includes hydraulic impact hammers and complementary technologies covering noise mitigation, drilling, grouting and specialist lifting and handling. These capabilities are particularly important as offshore wind developers increasingly require solutions capable of installing larger monopiles and other foundation structures.
Jochem Scherpenisse, Executive Vice President of Menck Marine Foundations, described the acquisition as a new phase for the company. He said Menck’s employees and engineering capabilities have helped establish a strong reputation in the market and that Cadeler’s understanding of offshore wind installation requirements makes it a suitable long-term owner.
The transaction is also expected to improve Menck’s financial flexibility, allowing the company to support its growth plans and invest in new technologies.
One major development is Menck’s planned introduction of a next-generation Wind Hammer in early 2027. The technology is designed to support the compliant installation of ultra-large offshore wind foundations, addressing the industry’s shift toward larger turbines and foundation structures.
Existing Relationship Between Cadeler and Menck
Cadeler and Menck already have an established working relationship, making the acquisition a natural extension of their existing cooperation. Menck currently supplies the 4,400-kilojoule impact hammer used by Cadeler for foundation installation activities on the Hornsea 3 offshore wind project.
The existing relationship demonstrates how Menck’s equipment and Cadeler’s installation vessels can operate together on major offshore wind developments. Bringing the two companies under common ownership could create additional opportunities to coordinate equipment availability, engineering resources and project planning.
The acquisition is expected to reduce Cadeler’s reliance on subcontracted foundation installation services while increasing its flexibility when planning and executing offshore projects. Greater access to mission-critical equipment could also help the company respond more efficiently to changing project schedules and customer requirements.
Supporting Larger Offshore Wind Projects
The offshore wind sector is entering a period in which project scale is becoming a defining factor. Developers are pursuing larger turbines and bigger projects to improve energy production and reduce the cost of offshore generation. However, larger components also require more capable vessels, specialised equipment and advanced engineering solutions.
Cadeler’s existing fleet gives it the ability to undertake major offshore wind installation projects, while Menck adds specialised foundation installation technology and expertise. The combined capabilities are expected to strengthen the company’s ability to manage complex foundation installation campaigns.
The acquisition therefore supports Cadeler’s broader strategy of becoming a comprehensive installation partner rather than relying heavily on external suppliers for critical parts of project execution.
The company believes improved control over foundation installation capabilities can increase operational resilience, improve equipment utilisation and create greater value for customers.
Global Footprint
Menck is headquartered in Kaltenkirchen, Germany, and operates facilities in Hamburg, Singapore, Cornwall in the United Kingdom and Cork in Ireland. Its international footprint supports customers across multiple offshore energy markets.
Cadeler also has an established global presence and operates a fleet designed for large-scale offshore wind installation projects. The combination provides opportunities to leverage Menck’s specialist expertise across Cadeler’s international project portfolio.
Menck was acquired from Acteon, a UK-headquartered offshore energy services group that provides engineering and operational solutions across the offshore asset lifecycle.
Financing the Transaction
Cadeler financed the acquisition through available liquidity combined with a EUR 380 million acquisition facility provided by DNB Bank ASA and Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A.
The company expects the acquisition facility to be refinanced through long-term financing and cash flow generated from operations. This financing structure provides Cadeler with the resources required to complete the transaction while supporting its broader financial strategy.
With the acquisition now completed, Cadeler gains access to Menck’s specialist equipment, engineering capabilities and extensive foundation installation experience. At the same time, Menck receives the backing of a major offshore wind installation company with a global fleet and significant project experience.
As offshore wind projects continue to grow in scale and technical complexity, the combination of vessel capacity, foundation technology and engineering expertise could strengthen Cadeler’s position across the offshore wind installation market. By retaining Menck as an independent business while investing in its future development, Cadeler aims to expand its capabilities, improve operational resilience and provide customers with more comprehensive solutions for the next generation of offshore wind projects.
