Uniper Signs First Offshore Wind Power Purchase Agreement with Skyborn Renewables for Germany’s Gennaker Project
Uniper and Skyborn Renewables have entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that marks a significant milestone in Germany’s renewable energy transition. The agreement covers electricity generated by the Gennaker offshore wind project, which is set to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The deal also represents Uniper’s first-ever offshore wind PPA, reinforcing the company’s strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio while supporting Germany’s long-term energy security and decarbonization goals.
Under the terms of the agreement, Uniper will purchase 100 MW of electricity generation capacity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm. The contract will take effect following the project’s Commercial Operation Date (COD) and will remain in force for an initial period of ten years, with an option for both parties to extend the partnership beyond the initial term.
The agreement highlights the growing role of corporate power purchase agreements in accelerating renewable energy deployment while providing long-term revenue certainty for project developers and stable access to clean electricity for energy suppliers.
Strategic Milestone for Uniper
The signing of the agreement represents an important step in Uniper’s ongoing business transformation as the company continues shifting toward a more sustainable and diversified energy portfolio.
Commenting on the agreement, Michael Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of Uniper, said the company’s first offshore wind PPA demonstrates the successful implementation of its transformation strategy.
He noted that electricity generated from offshore wind resources in the German Baltic Sea will add domestically produced, low-carbon energy to Uniper’s growing portfolio of clean power assets. According to Lewis, the agreement also strengthens the resilience of Germany’s energy system by increasing the availability of reliable renewable electricity produced within the country.
The company has been steadily expanding its investments in clean energy technologies while maintaining its role in ensuring reliable energy supplies across Europe. Offshore wind is expected to become an increasingly important component of Uniper’s long-term strategy as demand for renewable electricity continues to grow across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors.
Skyborn Highlights Gennaker’s Importance
For Skyborn Renewables, the agreement represents another major achievement in the development of its flagship offshore wind project.
Patrick Lammers, Chief Executive Officer of Skyborn Renewables, described the agreement with Uniper as an important milestone for the Gennaker project. He emphasized that the project serves as Skyborn’s blueprint for delivering large-scale offshore wind developments and demonstrates how complex offshore renewable energy projects can be successfully developed, financed, constructed, and operated.
Lammers also praised the efforts of the teams involved in bringing the agreement to completion, highlighting their contribution to advancing one of Germany’s most significant renewable energy developments.
The partnership with Uniper strengthens the commercial foundation of the Gennaker project while reinforcing Skyborn’s position as one of Europe’s leading offshore wind developers.
Supporting Germany’s Energy Transition
Germany continues to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy generation as part of its ambitious climate objectives and efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The Gennaker project is expected to make a substantial contribution to these national goals by supplying large volumes of domestically generated clean electricity. Long-term PPAs such as this agreement provide developers with greater financial certainty while enabling utilities and energy suppliers to secure renewable electricity for customers under predictable pricing structures.
As renewable energy penetration increases across Europe, offshore wind is becoming an essential source of reliable electricity due to its high generation capacity and favorable operating conditions compared with many onshore renewable resources.
The agreement between Uniper and Skyborn reflects this broader market trend, demonstrating increasing confidence in offshore wind as a cornerstone of Europe’s future energy mix.
Expanding Uniper’s Renewable Portfolio
The addition of offshore wind generation further strengthens Uniper’s diversified energy portfolio.
The company currently operates across multiple segments of the energy value chain, including flexible power generation, natural gas storage, renewable energy, hydrogen development, and energy trading. This diversified approach allows Uniper to maintain security of supply while supporting the ongoing transition toward lower-carbon energy systems.
Power Purchase Agreements are becoming an increasingly important component of Uniper’s renewable energy strategy. By securing electricity from offshore wind projects, the company can better meet growing customer demand for sustainable energy solutions while reducing exposure to market volatility.
Uniper has announced plans to invest approximately €8 billion through the early 2030s as part of its long-term transformation strategy. These investments are intended to strengthen three core priorities: maintaining secure energy supplies, supporting industrial competitiveness across Europe, and expanding renewable electricity generation.
The offshore wind agreement with Skyborn aligns directly with these strategic objectives and further enhances the company’s renewable energy capabilities.
Gennaker Set to Become Germany’s Largest Baltic Sea Offshore Wind Farm
The Gennaker offshore wind project is expected to become one of Germany’s most significant renewable energy assets.
With a planned installed capacity of up to 976.5 MW, the project will be the largest offshore wind farm located in the German Baltic Sea once fully operational.
The wind farm is projected to generate enough renewable electricity each year to supply approximately one million households, significantly increasing Germany’s clean power generation capacity and supporting national climate targets.
Beyond electricity production, Gennaker demonstrates Skyborn Renewables’ comprehensive expertise across the entire offshore wind development process. The company is responsible for every stage of the project, including site development, permitting, financing, engineering, construction, and long-term operations.
The successful execution of such a large-scale project highlights the growing maturity of Germany’s offshore wind sector and its importance in delivering secure, domestically produced renewable energy.
