Black & Veatch is championing sustainable water management for the Asia Pacific mining industry, emphasizing practices that conserve freshwater resources for local communities while promoting water resilience. In Australia, where mining and other industries account for approximately 20% of national water use, according to CSIRO, Black & Veatch sees an opportunity to implement solutions like desalination and water recycling to boost efficiency, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions.
Mick Scrivens, Black & Veatch’s Vice President and Director for Australia Pacific, highlighted the strategic benefits of these solutions, stating that sustainable water practices not only support environmental goals but also strengthen the mining sector and benefit surrounding communities.
At IMARC 2024, Black & Veatch is leading the conference’s sole dedicated session on water management in mining. Hosted by Scrivens, the session will cover strategies for integrating water planning at each mine lifecycle stage, emphasizing targeted investments in advanced water technologies and meaningful stakeholder involvement.
Black & Veatch’s participation in IMARC 2024 includes the following sessions:
- “Where’s the Water Coming From?” — Brady Hays, Senior VP, will discuss infrastructure planning with Corinne Cheeseman, CEO of the Australian Water Association.
- “How to Sustainably Manage Water in Mining in Australia” — Garrick Field, Solutions Director, will host a panel with representatives from BHP, Legacie, ICMM, and the Government of Western Australia.
- “Getting Projects Out of the Ground Faster” — Jonathan Dunham, Associate VP, will participate in a discussion on accelerating project timelines.
Black & Veatch’s expertise in delivering integrated water and energy solutions has earned recognition across Australia, including for the Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Project, which helped address the millennium drought.
