SLB Capturi and Aker Solutions Secure Contract to Provide Carbon

SLB Capturi and Aker Solutions have been awarded a significant engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) contract by Hafslund Celsio AS to deliver a carbon capture solution at its waste-to-energy facility in Klemetsrud, Oslo. This facility is Norway’s largest waste-to-energy plant and plays a critical role in the country’s energy infrastructure as the biggest district heating supplier. The contract marks a crucial step in Norway’s broader carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy, as Hafslund Celsio’s project is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full value-chain CCS initiative.

The agreement encompasses the design and implementation of a carbon capture facility, including a liquefaction system, temporary CO2 storage, and a loading terminal at the waste incineration plant. Additionally, it involves the development of an intermediate CO2 storage and ship-loading system at the Oslo harbor. This infrastructure will enable the captured carbon to be transported to the Northern Lights storage facility on the Norwegian continental shelf, where it will be permanently stored. Once fully operational, the carbon capture plant is projected to sequester approximately 350,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, significantly reducing emissions from waste incineration.

The EPCIC contract follows an extensive cost optimization phase that focused on identifying efficiencies in design and project execution. Among the improvements was a layout optimization that maximized space utilization while ensuring operational efficiency. As a result, the project will now employ SLB Capturi’s modularized Just Catch™ 400 unit. This design approach reduces the overall footprint of the facility, streamlines installation, and minimizes on-site outfitting work, making the project more cost-effective and feasible.

This contract represents the second carbon capture facility under the Longship project in which SLB Capturi is involved. The company, in collaboration with Aker Solutions, is already engaged in the development of a carbon capture plant at Heidelberg Materials’ cement facility in Brevik, Norway. The expertise gained from the Brevik project will be instrumental in ensuring the successful execution of the Hafslund Celsio project.

The Northern Lights initiative, which will receive the CO2 captured from this project, is a collaborative effort between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, and is poised to become one of the world’s first open-source CO2 transport and storage solutions.
