California American Water has partnered with Paired Power, a leading U.S. solar microgrid manufacturer, to implement innovative, resilient renewable energy solutions for electric vehicle (EV) charging in its San Diego District. This new initiative will enable the company to power its EVs independently of the grid.
“We designed PairTree with the future in mind, and it’s exciting to see our solution adopted by such a forward-thinking company like California American Water, which serves over 750,000 Californians,” said Tom McCalmont, CEO of Paired Power.
Recently, the company installed Paired Power’s PairTree, a U.S.-manufactured solar canopy that integrates solar power with grid power and battery storage. This setup ensures reliable EV charging both day and night and provides emergency backup power during grid outages, reducing overall dependence on the grid.
Kevin Tilden, President of California American Water, commented, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Paired Power on this important project. Their clean energy solutions will help us lower our carbon footprint and cut long-term costs for our customers. This initiative underscores our commitment to disaster preparedness, emission reduction, and enhancing local air quality, health, and safety.”
By investing in EV infrastructure, California American Water aims to promote public health and environmental sustainability. The EPA’s emission rates calculator estimates that using PairTree to charge just one vehicle will prevent approximately 4,472 pounds of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the weight of a Tesla Model Y.
“We’re honored to support California American Water’s electric vehicles with our solar-powered solutions,” McCalmont added. “PairTree’s adoption by such a respected organization highlights our commitment to advancing clean energy technology.”
California American Water continues its legacy of environmental stewardship with this new collaboration. Paired Power’s solar-powered microgrid EV charging aligns with California American Water’s dedication to preserving California’s land, air, and water resources.
