Glenfarne Welcomes $50B+ U.S.-Korea Investment in Alaska LNG

Glenfarne Welcomes $50 Billion-Plus South Korean Investment in Alaska LNG

Glenfarne Group, LLC (“Glenfarne”), the lead developer and majority owner of Alaska LNG, has welcomed the announcement of a more than $50 billion investment from South Korea in the Alaska LNG project. The announcement represents a significant milestone for the long-planned natural gas development and provides an important foundation for advancing the project toward a final investment decision (FID) and, ultimately, construction.

Brendan Duval, CEO and Founder of Glenfarne, joined U.S. President Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office for the announcement of the South Korean investment. According to Glenfarne, the commitment is expected to provide the scale of capital necessary to support the next stage of project development while the company works with the U.S. and Korean governments to determine the investment structure and complete the remaining requirements needed to reach FID.

Alaska LNG is being developed as a large-scale natural gas and liquefied natural gas project intended to connect Alaska’s North Slope gas resources with domestic and international markets. The project encompasses gas production, pipeline infrastructure and LNG facilities designed to move natural gas from Alaska to markets beyond the state.

For Glenfarne, the South Korean investment marks the culmination of substantial commercial and development work undertaken since the company became the project’s lead developer in March 2025. Over the past 18 months, Glenfarne has focused on establishing the commercial agreements, engineering framework, supply arrangements, workforce plans and construction partnerships necessary to move Alaska LNG toward a final investment decision.

“We came to Alaska to build this project, and every decision we make starts with what will move us closer to delivering affordable, reliable gas and long-term economic benefits for Alaskans,” said Brendan Duval, CEO and Founder of Glenfarne. “Today’s announcement brings together the capital needed to accelerate Alaska LNG to a final investment decision and construction. We are ready to deliver on the opportunity Alaska LNG represents for Alaska and the United States.”

The company said the investment announcement builds on agreements Glenfarne has secured across multiple parts of the Alaska LNG development. These agreements cover LNG sales, North Slope gas supply, domestic Alaska gas supply, labor, engineering, pipeline construction, equipment and materials, as well as strategic investment and partnerships.

Glenfarne is targeting a 16 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) commercial foundation to support the project’s final investment decision. The company said commercial agreements currently represent approximately 13 MTPA of that target. The progress indicates that a substantial portion of the planned LNG capacity has already been supported by commercial arrangements, while additional work remains to complete the broader commercial and financial structure.

The company’s development strategy has focused on bringing together the different elements required for a large-scale LNG project. Long-term LNG sales arrangements are a central component because they can provide a commercial framework for future production. At the same time, securing reliable gas supplies, construction capabilities, engineering resources, equipment and a qualified workforce is necessary for the project to transition from development into construction.

Glenfarne has also emphasized the potential economic implications of Alaska LNG for the state. Development of the project would require significant construction activity and could create opportunities for workers, contractors, suppliers and other businesses. The company has said that its objective is to ensure that Alaska captures economic benefits associated with the project, including employment and long-term commercial opportunities.

“For Alaskans, this is about getting to the point where we can put people to work and start building,” said Adam Prestidge, President of Glenfarne Alaska LNG. “Glenfarne has spent the past 18 months building the commercial, engineering, workforce and construction foundation for this project. This investment gives us the scale of capital needed, and we will keep working to make sure Alaska captures the jobs, economic opportunity and long-term value this project can create.”

The South Korean investment also strengthens the international dimension of Alaska LNG. South Korea is a major LNG-importing country, making reliable access to natural gas supplies an important consideration for its energy sector. The investment announcement connects Alaska’s substantial natural gas resources with potential long-term demand in Asian markets, while also supporting the broader commercial framework being developed for the project.

For the United States, Alaska LNG has the potential to expand LNG infrastructure and create another pathway for domestic natural gas to reach international customers. The project’s development would involve extensive infrastructure, including natural gas transportation facilities and LNG production capabilities. Glenfarne’s current work is focused on bringing those components together within a commercially viable project structure.

Reaching FID will remain a critical next step. A final investment decision generally represents the point at which project sponsors commit significant capital to move forward with construction after evaluating commercial arrangements, financing, engineering, permitting, supply and other development requirements. Glenfarne said it will continue working with the U.S. and Korean governments to finalize the investment structure and address the remaining steps necessary to reach that milestone.

The company’s progress since March 2025 reflects an effort to advance Alaska LNG on several fronts simultaneously. Rather than relying solely on capital commitments, Glenfarne has worked to develop a broader project ecosystem involving customers, gas suppliers, engineering companies, labor organizations, construction partners, equipment providers and strategic investors.

The company’s commercial agreements covering approximately 13 MTPA of its 16 MTPA target are a key part of that effort. Additional agreements and project development activities will be required as Glenfarne works toward the remaining commercial capacity and prepares the project for a final investment decision.

The project could also have implications for Alaska’s natural gas infrastructure and long-term energy supply. By connecting North Slope resources with LNG facilities and pipeline infrastructure, Alaska LNG is intended to provide a route for natural gas that can serve both domestic requirements and international markets.

Glenfarne said the newly announced investment provides the capital foundation needed to accelerate the project’s development. The company now expects to focus on finalizing the investment structure, completing outstanding commercial and development requirements, and progressing toward FID and construction.

The announcement therefore represents another major stage in Glenfarne’s effort to advance Alaska LNG. With commercial agreements covering most of its targeted LNG capacity and a proposed South Korean investment exceeding $50 billion, the company is moving into a phase centered increasingly on financing, final project preparation and construction readiness.

For Alaska, Glenfarne continues to position the project around employment, infrastructure development and long-term economic opportunities. For the United States, the project represents an opportunity to develop Alaska’s natural gas resources and expand LNG-related infrastructure. For South Korea, participation provides a strategic connection to a major U.S. natural gas development and the broader LNG market.

Glenfarne said it remains focused on completing the work required to reach FID and begin construction. The company’s next steps will include working with government partners and other stakeholders to finalize the investment framework while continuing to advance the commercial, engineering, workforce and construction components already established over the past 18 months.

With the newly announced investment adding substantial financial support to the project, Glenfarne is seeking to translate the commercial and development progress achieved since March 2025 into a final investment decision and the start of construction on Alaska LNG.
