ABB to Acquire Premium Power to Expand Electrification Consulting Across Europe
Global technology leader ABB has announced an agreement to acquire Premium Power, an electrical engineering consultancy headquartered near Dublin, Ireland. The transaction, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, aims to strengthen ABB’s electrification consulting capabilities and expand its support for customers facing increasingly complex power system challenges. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Strengthening ABB’s Consulting Capabilities
The acquisition comes at a time when electrification demand is accelerating worldwide. Industries are rapidly adopting digital technologies, integrating renewable energy sources, and managing tighter grid constraints. These shifts have made power systems more complex, increasing the need for specialized engineering expertise to design, operate, and future-proof electrical infrastructure.
By bringing Premium Power into its portfolio, ABB plans to enhance its consulting offering known as ABB Navigate. The addition of Premium Power’s expertise will deepen ABB’s capabilities in areas such as power system studies, grid connection and compliance modeling, power quality analysis, electrical safety, and risk management.
The move aligns with ABB’s broader mergers and acquisitions strategy, which focuses on complementary investments that strengthen core capabilities and deliver long-term value to customers. Integrating Premium Power’s engineering consultancy into ABB’s services is expected to allow the company to support clients at the power-systems level more consistently and at greater scale across Europe.
Meeting Growing Demand for Resilient Power Systems
As industries such as data centers, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and advanced industrial facilities continue to expand, reliable and resilient electrical systems have become essential. These sectors rely on uninterrupted power and strict regulatory compliance, making expert guidance increasingly critical.
ABB expects the acquisition to help customers better understand risks, resilience, and upgrade priorities before system constraints lead to downtime, higher costs, or operational disruptions. By combining Premium Power’s system-level consulting expertise with ABB’s execution and service capabilities, the company aims to deliver more comprehensive solutions—from grid connection to on-site electrical infrastructure.
Stuart Thompson, President of ABB’s Electrification Services division, said the acquisition strengthens ABB’s ability to advise clients on complex electrical systems and compliance challenges. He noted that such expertise is particularly important for mission-critical industries, where reliability is paramount. According to Thompson, expanding and modernizing electrical systems is essential for energy resilience as demand rises and networks become more complex.
