Repsol Honored with Platts Global Energy Award for 100% Renewable Fuels in Iberia
Repsol has been awarded the prestigious Platts Global Energy Award in recognition of its deployment of NEXA fuels of 100% renewable origin across Spain and Portugal. This accolade, presented in the category of Excellence in Energy – Downstream at a gala held in New York, underscores the company’s leadership in promoting renewable fuels and advancing sustainable energy solutions in the Iberian Peninsula.
The Platts Global Energy Awards are widely regarded as the most esteemed honors within the global energy sector. They recognize outstanding achievement in innovation, leadership, and sustainability across all segments of the industry. Repsol was singled out by the independent jury for its exceptional ability to address the dual challenge of ensuring affordable and reliable energy supply while simultaneously accelerating decarbonization across its operations and product portfolio.
This recognition highlights Repsol’s strategic vision in integrating renewable fuels on a large scale, demonstrating the company’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Europe’s energy transition. By combining ambitious sustainability goals with operational excellence, Repsol has positioned itself as a pioneer in the renewable fuels market, setting new standards for the downstream energy sector.
Currently, Repsol’s NEXA diesel is available at nearly 1,500 service stations throughout Spain and Portugal, making it one of the largest distribution networks for 100% renewable fuels in Europe. This widespread availability ensures that consumers can access renewable alternatives easily, reinforcing Repsol’s commitment to promoting sustainable mobility and cleaner transport solutions.
The company has also invested heavily in production infrastructure to support this rollout. Repsol operates the first industrial-scale plant in the Iberian Peninsula, located in Cartagena, which produces 100% renewable fuels with an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes, including renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Looking ahead, a second plant in Puertollano is scheduled to begin operations in 2026, adding approximately 200,000 tonnes of renewable diesel annually for road and maritime transport. These developments demonstrate Repsol’s capacity to scale up production and meet growing demand for renewable fuels, contributing meaningfully to Europe’s climate objectives.
Repsol has also achieved a significant technological milestone in Tarragona, where it recently began industrial-scale production of gasoline derived entirely from renewable sources. The 95 NEXA gasoline is already available at more than 20 service stations in Spain, with the company aiming to expand to 30 points of sale before the end of the year. By achieving this breakthrough, Repsol has reinforced its position at the forefront of energy innovation, illustrating that renewable fuels can match the performance and reliability of conventional fuels.
Both NEXA diesel and gasoline are formulated to offer the same properties as conventional premium fuels. This ensures optimal engine performance, enhanced protection, and improved cleanliness, while remaining fully compatible with existing vehicles without requiring modifications. This compatibility is particularly important given that combustion engines—whether petrol, diesel, or hybrid—still represent more than 98% of the European vehicle fleet, and account for 87% of vehicle sales in Spain so far this year. As such, 100% renewable fuels like NEXA play a critical role in meeting Spain’s and Europe’s climate targets, particularly in the context of upcoming regulatory changes, including proposals to phase out combustion engines by 2035.
The Platts Global Energy Awards are highly competitive. In this year’s 27th edition, 211 companies and individuals from 37 countries were shortlisted as finalists across 21 categories. Winners are selected by an independent panel of energy industry experts with extensive experience in regulation, policymaking, corporate governance, trade, and strategic consulting. This rigorous evaluation process ensures that recipients represent the highest standards of innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence.
Repsol has a strong history of recognition at the Platts Awards. Chairman Antonio Brufau was named CEO of the Year in 2012, while the company received three awards in 2015, including Energy Company of the Year. More recently, in 2024, Repsol earned three accolades for Energy Company of the Year, for financing renewable energy projects, and for its innovative renewable fuel plant in Cartagena. This continued recognition reflects the company’s enduring commitment to leadership in the energy transition and its ability to combine technological innovation with large-scale implementation.
The Platts Awards are organized and hosted by S&P Global Commodity Insights, the leading independent provider of information, analysis, and benchmark pricing across energy, petrochemical, metals, shipping, and commodities markets. These awards serve as a benchmark for excellence and innovation within the global energy sector, highlighting companies that are driving change, reducing carbon footprints, and contributing to sustainable economic growth worldwide.
Repsol’s achievement with NEXA fuels is more than an industry milestone; it represents a tangible contribution to the global push for decarbonization. By producing renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, and gasoline on an industrial scale, the company demonstrates that large-scale adoption of renewable fuels is both feasible and impactful. With nearly 1,500 points of sale for NEXA diesel and growing availability of renewable gasoline, Repsol is ensuring that consumers have practical, accessible solutions to reduce emissions without compromising performance.
As Europe moves toward ambitious climate goals, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the role of renewable fuels becomes increasingly vital. Repsol’s ongoing investments in production capacity, technology, and distribution networks showcase how industry leaders can combine sustainability with operational success. The Platts Global Energy Award for NEXA fuels is a testament to Repsol’s strategic vision, operational excellence, and commitment to a cleaner energy future.
Through this recognition, Repsol reinforces its position as a global leader in renewable fuels, providing a model for other energy companies seeking to innovate, decarbonize, and meet the energy demands of today while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
