Xcel Energy Fuels Economic Development as the Energy Sector Evolves

Xcel Energy Drives Grid Modernization and Community Growth Amid Rising Energy Demand

Xcel Energy is accelerating investments in electric generation, grid infrastructure and clean energy resources as it prepares for a rapidly changing energy future marked by increasing electrification and growing customer demand. The company outlined its progress and long-term sustainability strategy in its 21st Annual Sustainability Report, highlighting significant achievements in emissions reductions, affordability, reliability and community development.

As demand for electricity expands across multiple sectors—including data centers, electric vehicles, residential heating systems and industrial development—Xcel Energy is focusing on building a stronger, more resilient energy system capable of meeting future needs while maintaining affordability and environmental responsibility.

The utility has continued to expand its portfolio of energy resources, combining renewable generation, grid enhancements and advanced technologies to ensure customers have access to dependable and cost-effective electricity. These investments are designed not only to support economic growth but also to advance the company’s clean energy objectives.

“More than 150 years ago, our company began powering communities and supporting economic progress, and that mission remains unchanged today,” said Bob Frenzel, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Xcel Energy. “The transition toward greater electrification is transforming industries, homes and transportation systems. We are responding through strategic investments, innovative technologies and an unwavering commitment to reliability, affordability and sustainability.”

Advancing Carbon Reduction Goals

One of the most significant achievements highlighted in the report is Xcel Energy’s continued progress in reducing carbon emissions associated with the electricity it supplies. Since 2005, the company has lowered those emissions by 58%, reflecting years of investment in renewable energy resources and the gradual retirement of coal-fired generation.

The company noted that it continues to navigate an operating environment characterized by higher material costs, supply chain challenges and evolving public policy requirements. Despite these pressures, Xcel Energy remains focused on balancing environmental goals with customer affordability.

A key component of its emissions reduction strategy has been the retirement and conversion of coal-fired power plants. Since 2007, the utility has retired or converted 27 coal units without workforce layoffs. Under state-approved transition plans, the company expects to retire or convert its remaining coal facilities by the end of the decade, further reducing the carbon intensity of its generation portfolio.

In addition to transforming its power generation fleet, Xcel Energy is reducing emissions from its operations. Electrification of portions of the company’s vehicle fleet has already prevented approximately 700 metric tons of carbon emissions, demonstrating how operational changes can contribute to broader sustainability objectives.

Improving Resource Efficiency

The report also highlighted progress in water conservation, another important aspect of the company’s sustainability efforts. Since 2005, Xcel Energy has reduced water consumption associated with electricity generation by 35%.

Water efficiency has become increasingly important as utilities across North America seek to address resource constraints while supporting growing energy demand. By modernizing power plants, increasing renewable generation and improving operational efficiency, the company has significantly lowered the amount of water required to produce electricity.

These improvements align with broader environmental stewardship goals and help strengthen the sustainability of the energy system as climate conditions continue to evolve.

Maintaining High Reliability Standards

While pursuing ambitious sustainability targets, Xcel Energy continues to prioritize reliability and customer service performance. According to the report, the company’s electric system maintains an overall reliability rate of 99.98%, outperforming industry benchmarks.

Extreme weather events have become more frequent and severe across many regions of the United States, increasing the importance of resilient energy infrastructure. Xcel Energy reported that during active storm events it successfully restored power to 89% of affected customers within 24 hours.

The company’s investments in transmission systems, distribution networks, digital monitoring technologies and grid modernization projects are helping improve resilience and reduce outage durations. These efforts are expected to play an increasingly important role as electricity demand grows and weather-related disruptions become more common.

Delivering Affordable Energy

Affordability remains a major focus area for the utility. Despite ongoing investments in infrastructure and clean energy resources, Xcel Energy reported that customer electric bills over the last five years remained 29% below the national average, while natural gas bills averaged 11% below national levels.

The company attributes much of these savings to its long-term investments in renewable energy generation, particularly wind and solar resources. Renewable projects have reduced exposure to fuel price volatility while creating significant cost savings for customers.

Between 2017 and 2025, Xcel Energy estimates that avoided fuel expenses and tax credits associated with wind energy projects generated approximately $6 billion in customer savings. These benefits demonstrate how renewable energy can support both environmental objectives and economic value for consumers.

The company continues to expand customer-focused programs aimed at reducing energy consumption and lowering utility costs. During 2025, Xcel Energy provided approximately $175 million in rebates and incentives that encouraged adoption of energy-efficient technologies such as advanced lighting systems, appliances and building improvements.

Participation in these programs by residential and commercial customers resulted in energy savings totaling roughly 1,100 gigawatt-hours. According to the company, that amount of electricity is sufficient to power approximately 140,000 homes for a year.

In addition, Xcel Energy helped connect more than 200,000 households facing financial challenges with over $181 million in available energy assistance resources through both company-sponsored and public assistance programs.

Supporting Economic Development Across Eight States

Beyond energy delivery, Xcel Energy continues to play a significant role in regional economic development throughout the communities it serves.

The company works closely with local governments, business organizations, developers and community leaders across more than 1,600 cities and counties to attract investment, create jobs and support long-term economic growth.

Xcel Energy currently employs approximately 11,500 people throughout its service territory and serves as an important economic driver across eight states. In 2025 alone, the company spent $5.8 billion with small and local businesses, supporting regional supply chains and local economies.

Its economic development initiatives also helped create approximately 1,400 new jobs while generating an estimated $7 billion in additional capital investment. During the year, Xcel Energy’s economic development team successfully completed 15 major projects designed to expand industries such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace and data center development.

One notable example involved an agreement to supply power for a new Google data center in Pine Island, Minnesota. The project is expected to provide substantial economic benefits to the state and surrounding region while supporting continued growth in digital infrastructure.

Importantly, the agreement includes significant development of new clean energy resources, helping Minnesota advance toward its clean energy targets while ensuring existing customers continue to benefit from system-wide investments.

Investing in Communities

Community engagement remains a central part of Xcel Energy’s corporate strategy. Through charitable giving, volunteerism and partnerships with nonprofit organizations, the company continues to support the communities where its employees and customers live and work.

In collaboration with the Xcel Energy Foundation, company employees and retirees contributed a combined $13.5 million to community organizations and initiatives during 2025. These investments supported programs focused on education, workforce development, environmental stewardship and community well-being.

Employee volunteer efforts also generated meaningful impact. According to the report, volunteer activities contributed approximately $3.3 million in economic value through support for nonprofit organizations and community improvement projects.

As energy demand continues to grow and customer expectations evolve, Xcel Energy’s latest Sustainability Report illustrates how the company is pursuing a balanced strategy that combines reliability, affordability, environmental progress and economic development. Through continued investments in modern infrastructure, clean energy resources and community partnerships, the utility aims to strengthen the energy system while helping the regions it serves prosper in the decades ahead.
