Westinghouse and Shawflex Sign MoU for AP1000®, AP300™, and eVinci™ Projects

Westinghouse Electric Company and Shawflex have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on nuclear new-build projects both in Canada and globally. This agreement outlines Shawflex’s potential role in providing cables, connectors, and assemblies for Westinghouse’s key projects, including the AP1000®, AP300™, and eVinci™ nuclear reactors.

Shawflex’s high-quality nuclear wire, cable, and assembly solutions are seen as a perfect complement to Westinghouse’s advanced nuclear power projects. Jarrod Shugg, Vice President and General Manager at Shawflex, emphasized the company’s readiness to leverage its Canadian manufacturing capabilities and decades of experience in the nuclear industry. “Shawflex’s nuclear wire, cable, and assembly solutions are a great fit for Westinghouse’s advanced nuclear power projects. We are ready to leverage our high-quality Canadian manufacturing and decades of nuclear experience in support of Westinghouse’s vision to expand the power of clean energy around the globe.”

Shawflex, with its manufacturing headquarters located in Rexdale, Ontario, is a prominent supplier of electrical wire and cable. This year, the company is expanding its operations with a move to a new, larger facility in Vaughan, Ontario. With over 40 years of experience in designing complex cable configurations for the nuclear power industry, Shawflex is well-equipped to meet the demanding requirements of modern nuclear energy projects.

Dan Lipman, President of Westinghouse Energy Systems, highlighted Shawflex’s established relationship with Westinghouse, stating, “Westinghouse currently relies on Shawflex to supply products for our global instrumentation and control production shop in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, for plant upgrades and replacement projects. Their known expertise will help support the deployment of AP1000, AP300, and eVinci projects in Canada and around the world.”

The strategic partnership with Shawflex is designed to strengthen Westinghouse’s supply chain for its global instrumentation and control business, while also providing significant support for nuclear new-build projects, not just in Canada but globally. John Gorman, President of Westinghouse Canada, noted, “Extending our relationship with Shawflex enhances our supply chain for Westinghouse’s global instrument and controls business while providing opportunities to support nuclear new-build projects in Canada and beyond.” He also pointed out that Shawflex’s involvement supports the Canadian economy, as each AP1000 unit built globally could generate nearly $1 billion in GDP through local suppliers.

This MoU marks the latest step in a series of agreements with Canadian companies to support Westinghouse’s global efforts in deploying its advanced nuclear technologies, including the AP1000, AP300, and eVinci reactors. These technologies are set to play a critical role in the energy transition, offering safe and sustainable power solutions to meet the world’s growing demand for clean energy.

Westinghouse Electric Company, owned by Canadian energy giants Brookfield and Cameco, is a leading force in the nuclear energy sector. The company is the only nuclear vendor with a fully operational, advanced Generation III+ reactor technology that is ready to be deployed in Canada by as early as 2035. A four-unit AP1000 facility in Canada can generate enough power to supply at least three million homes, significantly contributing to Canada’s energy needs. Additionally, the construction of this facility would support $28.7 billion in GDP during the building phase and provide ongoing contributions of $8.1 billion annually once in operation.

Beyond the financial and economic benefits, the four-unit AP1000 project would create approximately 12,000 high-quality, full-time jobs for Canadians, offering substantial opportunities for Canadian firms to participate in the growing global nuclear market. The Canadian collaboration is integral to Westinghouse’s broader goal of supporting over 30 AP1000 units currently in development worldwide.

The company’s legacy includes supplying the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957, and its technology now forms the basis for nearly half of the world’s operating nuclear plants.
