TotalEnergies Releases 2025 Sustainability Report, Strengthens Emissions Targets

TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) (LSE:TTE) (NYSE:TTE) has published its Sustainability & Climate – 2025 Progress Report, outlining the significant strides made in its transition strategy. This report serves as an update to the sustainability information that will be integrated into the Universal Registration Document in line with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

2024: A Year of Progress for TotalEnergies’ Multi-Energy Strategy

In 2024, TotalEnergies demonstrated the effectiveness of its integrated, multi-energy strategy, which blends profitable growth with sustainable development. This strategy focuses on two key areas: oil & gas (with a strong emphasis on LNG) and electricity (particularly renewable energy), both of which are critical to the global energy transition. TotalEnergies’ approach proved its relevance as the company was the most profitable major energy company for the third consecutive year, reporting a 14.8% Return on Average Capital Employed (ROACE). The company also led in energy transition investments, committing nearly $5 billion in 2024 to low-carbon energy projects, primarily in electricity and renewables.

In hydrocarbons, TotalEnergies continues to responsibly develop and produce oil and gas with a focus on low-cost and low-emission operations. The company made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint, particularly in 2024:

  • Scope 1+2 greenhouse gas emissions from operated oil & gas facilities decreased by 36% compared to 2015.
  • Upstream oil & gas emissions intensity was reduced to 17 kg CO2e/boe, marking continuous improvement since 2020.
  • Methane emissions were reduced by 55% compared to 2020, exceeding the 2025 target of a 50% reduction ahead of schedule.
The Role of LNG in TotalEnergies’ Transition

As part of its strategy, TotalEnergies emphasizes LNG as a key transition energy source. LNG is seen as a cleaner alternative to coal for power generation and helps address the intermittency of renewable electricity. In 2024, TotalEnergies estimates that its LNG sales contributed to clients avoiding approximately 65 million tonnes of CO2e emissions. The company also actively contributes to the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), a global initiative that aims to reduce GHG emissions, particularly methane, across the industry. The OGDC now brings together 55 companies, representing almost 45% of global oil and gas production.

Expanding TotalEnergies’ Renewable Energy Business

In the electricity sector, TotalEnergies continues to develop a robust and profitable business model. In 2024, the company invested $4 billion in Integrated Power and increased its net electricity production by 23%. It also surpassed the 10% threshold for electricity in its sales mix. This growth has played a critical role in reducing the lifecycle carbon intensity of the company’s energy products sold, which decreased by 16.5% in 2024 compared to 2015, surpassing the initial target of a 14% reduction.

TotalEnergies Strengthens Emissions Reduction Targets for 2025

Building on these achievements, TotalEnergies is committed to further enhancing its emissions reduction targets for 2025. The company has set more ambitious goals to accelerate its progress in decarbonization:

  • Methane emissions from operated facilities (100%): The new target is a 60% reduction in methane emissions by 2025 compared to 2020, up from the previous target of 50%. The company is also deploying continuous detection technology across all upstream operated assets.
  • Scope 1+2 emissions from operated facilities (100%): The new target is to limit these emissions to less than 37 million tonnes of CO2e by 2025, down from the previously set target of less than 38 million tonnes.
  • Lifecycle carbon intensity of energy products sold: The new target is a 17% reduction in lifecycle carbon intensity by 2025 compared to 2015, up from the previous target of 15%.
Report Presentation and Webcast

The Sustainability & Climate – 2025 Progress Report will be presented online today at 2:00 PM (Paris time) by Mr. Aurélien Hamelle, President of Strategy & Sustainability, and Ms. Namita Shah, President of OneTech.
