SLB to Restore Offshore Production for Brunei Shell Petroleum

SLB Supports Offshore Production Restoration for Brunei Shell Petroleum

Global energy technology company SLB (NYSE: SLB) has been awarded a contract by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) to support production restoration from shut-in wells across several offshore fields in Brunei. The agreement brings together a broad range of subsurface, engineering, intervention and operational capabilities as BSP seeks to increase production from existing offshore infrastructure.

The contract represents an important step in the companies’ long-standing relationship in the region and introduces SLB’s integrated production restoration approach to Brunei Shell Petroleum for the first time. By combining multiple technical disciplines and services under a coordinated execution model, the program is designed to identify suitable well candidates, plan interventions and execute restoration activities efficiently.

Under the agreement, SLB will provide support throughout several stages of the production restoration process. The scope includes subsurface evaluation, well candidate selection, engineering and offshore execution, allowing technical teams to assess existing well conditions and determine the most appropriate opportunities for intervention.

The project will also integrate project management, intervention services, production monitoring, metering and marine logistics. Bringing these activities together under one coordinated framework is intended to streamline planning and execution while improving communication between the different disciplines involved in offshore well restoration.

According to SLB, the integrated approach is designed to help BSP maximize value from its existing offshore resources. Rather than treating individual elements of well restoration as separate activities, the program connects subsurface analysis, engineering, intervention planning and offshore operations into a unified workflow.

“Building on our long collaboration in the region, this contract reflects a shared commitment to maximizing value from existing offshore resources,” said Gokhan Yarim, senior vice president of Integration at SLB. “Together with BSP, we are combining SLB’s production expertise and integrated execution capabilities to help restore production from shut-in wells, increase recovery from existing infrastructure and support BSP’s long-term production objectives.”

Integrated Approach to Mature Offshore Assets

The award highlights the growing importance of production restoration programs as energy companies seek to improve output from mature oil and gas assets. Offshore fields can contain significant remaining production potential even after individual wells have been shut in. However, identifying economically viable restoration opportunities can require detailed subsurface analysis, engineering studies and carefully coordinated offshore intervention work.

Shut-in wells may be taken offline for a variety of technical, operational or economic reasons. Restoring production can therefore require a combination of diagnostics, reservoir evaluation, well intervention, facility assessments and logistical planning. An integrated approach can help operators evaluate these factors collectively before committing resources to offshore execution.

For BSP, the SLB program is intended to provide a structured framework for evaluating and restoring selected shut-in wells across multiple offshore fields. The approach can help prioritize wells based on their production potential and the technical requirements associated with bringing them back online.

The program is also aligned with standard Well, Reservoir and Facility Management (WRFM) methodology. WRFM brings together information from wells, reservoirs and surface facilities to support informed production decisions. By coordinating surveillance, engineering and intervention planning, operators can better understand asset performance and identify opportunities to improve recovery.

In the BSP project, this methodology supports a coordinated process spanning subsurface evaluation through offshore execution. The objective is to ensure that production restoration decisions are based on an integrated understanding of the well, reservoir and associated infrastructure.

Supporting Production From Existing Infrastructure

Maximizing production from existing infrastructure has become an increasingly important strategy for offshore operators. Developing new fields can require substantial investment, long project timelines and complex infrastructure. By contrast, restoring production from existing wells can potentially provide operators with an opportunity to improve output while making greater use of facilities that are already in place.

Mature offshore assets, however, can present significant technical challenges. Reservoir conditions may have changed over time, wells may require intervention, and production systems can become more complex as fields mature. Offshore work also requires detailed logistical coordination because equipment, personnel and vessels must be mobilized safely and efficiently.

The SLB contract addresses these requirements by incorporating marine logistics, intervention services, monitoring and metering into the wider production restoration program. The coordinated model is intended to reduce fragmentation between individual activities and provide a clearer execution pathway from well selection to offshore operations.

The approach also allows technical teams to incorporate production data and monitoring information into the restoration process. Such information can help evaluate well performance, establish production baselines and monitor results following intervention.

First Integrated Production Restoration Deployment for BSP

The project marks the first deployment of SLB’s integrated production restoration solution for Brunei Shell Petroleum. It brings together several SLB capabilities and workflows under a single program focused on improving production from existing offshore assets.

Rather than relying on individual services delivered independently, the integrated model connects the different stages of the restoration process. Subsurface specialists can contribute to candidate selection, engineers can develop intervention plans, and offshore teams can execute the selected activities while monitoring and metering capabilities provide production data.

This integrated structure is intended to support more efficient decision-making and execution. It can also help align the objectives of different technical teams around a common production target.

For SLB, the project demonstrates the company’s strategy of combining technology, domain expertise and integrated project execution to address production challenges faced by operators. For BSP, the program provides an additional mechanism for evaluating opportunities within its mature offshore portfolio.

Focus on Long-Term Production Objectives

The contract also reflects the broader relationship between SLB and Brunei Shell Petroleum. Their collaboration in the region provides a foundation for applying SLB’s production expertise to BSP’s existing offshore operations.

The restoration program is ultimately focused on supporting BSP’s long-term production objectives. By evaluating shut-in wells and targeting suitable candidates for intervention, the companies aim to improve utilization of existing assets and potentially increase recovery from mature fields.

The program’s integrated structure may also provide a repeatable framework for addressing additional production restoration opportunities. As operators continue to manage mature offshore portfolios, standardized workflows for well evaluation, intervention planning and execution can help improve consistency and operational efficiency.

Broader Offshore Industry Trend

The BSP contract comes amid a broader shift in the oil and gas industry toward maximizing recovery from existing assets. Operators are increasingly looking at ways to improve production, extend field life and optimize infrastructure before pursuing entirely new developments.

Integrated production restoration solutions can play a role in this strategy by combining subsurface expertise with engineering, intervention and operational capabilities. Such approaches are particularly relevant for mature offshore fields, where production optimization can involve multiple interconnected technical and logistical considerations.

SLB’s agreement with Brunei Shell Petroleum illustrates how operators and service companies are increasingly working through integrated models to address these challenges. The combination of well candidate selection, engineering, intervention, monitoring, metering and marine logistics provides a coordinated pathway for restoring production from selected shut-in wells.

As the program progresses, the focus will remain on identifying viable production opportunities and executing restoration activities safely and efficiently. By leveraging existing offshore infrastructure and applying coordinated production management practices, BSP and SLB aim to unlock additional value from mature assets while supporting the operator’s broader production goals.
