SLB and Equinor Sign Multi-Year Agreement to Strengthen Offshore Reservoir Stimulation on the Norwegian Continental Shelf

SLB and Equinor have entered into a multi-year agreement to expand offshore reservoir stimulation capabilities across the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), marking another significant milestone in their long-standing collaboration to support future energy production in Norway. The agreement includes a comprehensive modernization of the well stimulation vessel MV Island Captain, transforming it into one of the most advanced offshore stimulation vessels operating in the region.

The long-term partnership is designed to provide dedicated offshore stimulation capacity for Equinor’s future developments while strengthening the infrastructure required to unlock resources from increasingly complex reservoirs beneath the North Sea. As offshore operators continue to focus on maximizing production from existing fields while developing more technically challenging reserves, specialized well stimulation services have become essential for improving reservoir performance and enhancing hydrocarbon recovery.

A key component of the agreement is the extensive conversion of the Island Captain into a fully proppant-capable stimulation vessel. Once the upgrades are completed, the vessel will be equipped to perform high-intensity hydraulic stimulation operations that are increasingly required to develop tight offshore reservoirs across the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The modernization project will include significant improvements to the vessel’s operational capabilities. Following completion of the conversion, the Island Captain will be capable of carrying up to two million pounds of proppant. Proppant materials are then carried into these fractures to keep them open after pumping stops, allowing oil or natural gas to flow more freely toward the wellbore.
