Murphy Oil Names New Chief Legal Officer

Murphy Oil Appoints Michol L. Ecklund as Chief Legal Officer

Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE: MUR) has announced the appointment of Michol L. Ecklund as Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, strengthening the company’s executive leadership team as it continues to manage its legal, governance, compliance and broader corporate affairs. Ecklund will officially assume her new responsibilities on August 31, 2026.

In her new position, Ecklund will take responsibility for a broad range of corporate functions at Murphy Oil. Her portfolio will include legal affairs, compliance, corporate governance, government affairs, land, sustainability and risk management. She will also become a member of the company’s Executive Leadership Team, giving her a direct role in supporting strategic and operational decisions across the organization.

Ecklund will report directly to Eric M. Hambly, Murphy Oil’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Her appointment brings an experienced energy-sector legal executive into a senior leadership position at a company operating across the exploration and production industry.

Hambly highlighted Ecklund’s combination of leadership capabilities and industry experience when discussing the appointment.

“Michol’s demonstrated leadership, broad legal expertise and deep industry knowledge position her well to provide strategic oversight of these functions,” Hambly said. “We look forward to the contributions she will make to Murphy’s continued success.”

Extensive Energy Industry Experience

Ecklund brings more than 25 years of experience spanning legal affairs, corporate governance, compliance, sustainability and leadership within the energy sector. Her career has included senior positions at several major energy companies, providing her with experience across a range of legal and business issues affecting publicly traded organizations.

Before joining Murphy Oil, Ecklund served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Anew Climate. She joined Anew in 2024 and was responsible for leading the company’s legal, marketing and policy functions.

Her role at Anew gave her experience working across legal and policy matters while also contributing to the organization’s broader commercial and strategic activities. The position added to a career that has increasingly combined traditional legal responsibilities with sustainability, governance and corporate strategy.

Ecklund previously spent seven years at Callon Petroleum Company, where she held several significant leadership responsibilities. During her tenure, she served as Senior Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary.

Her responsibilities at Callon extended beyond legal matters, encompassing sustainability and corporate governance. This combination of roles provided experience relevant to her new position at Murphy Oil, where sustainability, risk management, governance and legal functions will all fall under her oversight.

Before Callon Petroleum, Ecklund spent 15 years at Marathon Oil Corporation. During her tenure at Marathon Oil, she held positions of increasing responsibility and ultimately became Deputy General Counsel.

Her long tenure at Marathon Oil allowed her to develop extensive knowledge of the legal and corporate requirements associated with a major publicly traded energy company. Her progression through increasingly senior positions also reflects a career focused on corporate legal leadership and strategic advisory responsibilities.

Ecklund began her legal career at Baker Botts L.L.P. in Houston. Her early experience at the law firm provided a foundation for the legal expertise she later applied to the energy industry through senior in-house positions.

Leadership Across Legal and Corporate Functions

Ecklund’s appointment comes with responsibility for several functions that are increasingly interconnected within energy companies. Legal and compliance activities play an important role in managing regulatory requirements, contractual obligations and corporate governance, while government affairs can influence relationships with regulators and policymakers.

Her responsibilities will also include sustainability, risk management and land functions. By placing these areas under a senior executive with extensive legal and energy-sector experience, Murphy Oil is bringing several key corporate disciplines together under one leadership role.

The combination of legal, governance, compliance and sustainability responsibilities reflects the increasingly broad scope of corporate leadership within the energy industry. Energy companies must navigate regulatory requirements, environmental considerations, stakeholder expectations, operational risks and changing market conditions while maintaining strong governance practices.

Ecklund’s previous experience across these areas gives her a background that aligns closely with the range of responsibilities included in her new position.

Academic and Board Experience

Ecklund holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University and a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. Her academic background combines a strong foundation in higher education with specialized legal training.

She also maintains a connection with Rice University through her service on the institution’s Board of Trustees. Her board experience adds another dimension to her background in governance and leadership.

Her combination of legal education, corporate experience and board service provides experience relevant to the responsibilities of a corporate secretary and senior legal executive. At Murphy Oil, she will be involved in matters involving corporate governance in addition to overseeing the company’s legal organization.

Strategic Role at Murphy Oil

As Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, Ecklund will play an important role in advising Murphy Oil’s senior management and supporting the company’s corporate objectives.

Her direct reporting relationship with Hambly places her within the company’s senior executive structure. Her participation on the Executive Leadership Team will allow her to contribute to discussions involving business strategy, risk, governance and other company-wide priorities.

The appointment also brings continuity in several areas of expertise that Ecklund has developed throughout her career. Her previous positions at Anew Climate, Callon Petroleum and Marathon Oil have given her exposure to traditional energy operations as well as sustainability, policy, governance and corporate legal matters.

Murphy Oil expects Ecklund to use that experience to provide strategic oversight of the functions under her leadership. Her responsibilities will encompass both legal and non-legal areas, making the position an important link between corporate governance, regulatory compliance, sustainability and business risk.

New Appointment Takes Effect August 31

Ecklund will officially begin her role at Murphy Oil on August 31, 2026. Following the transition, she will oversee the company’s legal, compliance, governance, government affairs, land, sustainability and risk management functions.

Her appointment represents another step in Murphy Oil’s ongoing executive leadership development and adds a veteran energy-sector legal professional to the company’s leadership team.

With more than two decades of experience in the energy industry, Ecklund enters the position with a background that spans law firm practice, major public energy companies, sustainability leadership, corporate governance and executive management.

Her experience at Marathon Oil and Callon Petroleum, followed by her leadership position at Anew Climate, has provided exposure to a wide range of challenges facing energy businesses. At Murphy Oil, that experience will be applied across multiple corporate functions as the company continues to pursue its strategic objectives.

The company’s leadership expects Ecklund’s legal expertise, industry knowledge and leadership experience to support Murphy Oil’s continued development. Reporting directly to Hambly and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, she will have a central role in advising the organization and overseeing several functions that are critical to its long-term operations.

The appointment therefore expands Murphy Oil’s senior leadership capabilities while bringing together legal, governance, compliance, sustainability and risk-management expertise under one executive. As Ecklund takes on her new responsibilities at the end of August, her extensive background in the energy sector is expected to provide strategic support across the company’s corporate and operational activities.
