LG Energy Solution (KRX: 373220) has announced a new partnership with General Motors (GM) to jointly develop prismatic battery cell technology. This marks the latest chapter in a 14-year strong collaboration between the two companies in the field of battery technology.
Under the terms of the agreement, LG Energy Solution and GM will co-develop prismatic battery cells and their associated chemistries. Once the technology is finalized, these prismatic cells will be used to power GM’s future electric vehicles (EVs).
This partnership is a significant milestone for LG Energy Solution, as it positions the company as the first global battery manufacturer to offer all three primary cell formats: pouch-type, cylindrical, and prismatic. The collaboration also underscores the strength of the partnership between LG Energy Solution and GM, particularly through their successful Ultium Cells joint venture, which has led to the creation of thousands of jobs in the U.S. with manufacturing plants in Ohio and Tennessee.
Prismatic battery cells are known for their flat, rectangular shape and rigid enclosure, which allow for more space-efficient packaging within battery modules and packs. LG Energy Solution brings extensive experience in prismatic cell production and has a broad patent portfolio covering battery design, manufacturing technologies, and packaging. The company is also leveraging its world-class stacking technology, as the industry shifts from winding to stacking for prismatic cell structures. With its proven expertise in materials and manufacturing, LG Energy Solution aims to offer differentiated prismatic solutions to meet the diverse needs of customers.
The addition of prismatic cells to LG Energy Solution’s portfolio will further strengthen its market leadership alongside its pouch-type and cylindrical cells. By offering a broader range of battery solutions, the company intends to provide efficient and safe power options for various EV segments, supporting the global transition to electric mobility.
“We are proud to expand our partnership with GM, one of our strongest partners. Together, we’ve already achieved significant progress and look forward to deepening our collaboration to develop the right battery chemistry and combinations that will support continued growth in the EV market,” said Wonjoon Suh, Executive Vice President and head of LG Energy Solution’s Advanced Automotive Battery division.
Kurt Kelty, GM’s Vice President of Battery Cell and Pack, added, “Together with LG Energy Solution, we’ve built Ultium Cells into one of the largest battery cell manufacturers in North America, creating thousands of advanced technology jobs in the U.S. and powering our diverse EV portfolio. We are focused on optimizing our battery technology to enhance EV performance, improve safety, and reduce costs. By extending our partnership with LG Energy Solution, we’re taking a significant step toward these goals.”
