Knox County Strengthens Energy Reliability with Grid Upgrades

Knox County Energy Grid Strengthened with Completion of Transmission Upgrade

Customers across Knox County, Illinois, are now benefiting from a more dependable electric grid following the successful completion of the Knox County Connector transmission project, which entered service in June. The new infrastructure is designed to improve reliability, strengthen power delivery, and support the region’s growing energy demands for decades to come.

The completed project features approximately 11 miles of new and upgraded high-voltage transmission lines connecting the existing Sandburg substation near Galesburg, Illinois, to facilities near Oneida. Most of the transmission line was rebuilt along existing utility corridors and co-located with existing Ameren Illinois infrastructure, minimizing the need for new right-of-way while modernizing critical components of the regional transmission network.

According to Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois, the investment significantly enhances the area’s ability to deliver electricity from a diverse range of energy resources while improving the resilience of the local power system.

Shawn Schukar, chairman and president of Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois, said the strengthened transmission network will provide long-term benefits for both residents and businesses across Knox County.

He noted that a more robust transmission system offers greater access to a balanced mix of safe, reliable, and affordable energy sources while ensuring the infrastructure is capable of supporting the evolving electricity needs of the region well into the future.

A key component of the project involved replacing aging electrical infrastructure, with some facilities having been in operation for more than a century. By modernizing these assets, Ameren has improved the reliability of the local grid and positioned it to accommodate increasing electricity demand driven by economic development, electrification, and the continued integration of diverse energy resources.

Transmission projects such as the Knox County Connector play an essential role in maintaining grid stability. Modern transmission networks allow electricity to move more efficiently between generating resources and communities, helping utilities respond to changing energy consumption patterns while reducing the risk of service interruptions.

The project team also emphasized the importance of community engagement throughout the planning and routing process. Ameren worked closely with local stakeholders, property owners, and residents to gather feedback before finalizing the transmission line design.

Joe DeGreeff, project manager for Ameren, thanked community members for sharing their ideas during the planning stages, noting that their input helped shape a routing plan designed to best serve the needs of the community while minimizing impacts wherever possible.

During construction, Ameren also focused on supporting the local economy by employing Illinois-based union electrical workers to complete the project. Keeping construction jobs within the state helped deliver economic benefits alongside the infrastructure improvements while ensuring the work was carried out by experienced, highly skilled professionals.

The completion of the Knox County Connector represents another step in Ameren’s broader efforts to modernize the electric transmission system across Illinois. As electricity demand continues to evolve, investments in transmission infrastructure are becoming increasingly important for maintaining reliable service, supporting future economic growth, and enabling the transition to a more resilient and flexible energy grid.

With the project now fully operational, customers throughout Knox County can expect improved system reliability, enhanced power delivery, and a transmission network better equipped to meet the energy requirements of homes, businesses, and industries for many years ahead.
