Essential Utilities Celebrates Drinking Water Week 2026 With Record Investments and Strong Water Quality Performance
Essential Utilities, Inc. announced its participation in Drinking Water Week 2026, joining utilities and communities across North America in recognizing the importance of safe and reliable drinking water. The annual observance, organized by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), highlights the critical role clean water plays in protecting public health, supporting local economies, and improving quality of life for millions of people.
As part of this year’s celebration, Essential Utilities reflected on a milestone year for its water utility business, Aqua, which delivered strong operational performance while making the largest infrastructure investment in company history. Serving more than 1.1 million customer accounts across eight states, Aqua continued to strengthen its water and wastewater systems through significant capital spending, technology upgrades, and expanded environmental initiatives.
The company invested nearly $791 million in water and wastewater infrastructure during 2025, a record level of spending aimed at modernizing aging systems, improving reliability, and ensuring long-term sustainability. These investments included pipeline replacements, treatment facility improvements, advanced monitoring systems, and other projects designed to maintain high-quality water service for customers and communities.

According to Franklin, the company’s 2025 performance demonstrated Essential Utilities’ commitment to operational excellence, environmental stewardship, and customer service. He noted that the company achieved record infrastructure investment levels, expanded its PFAS remediation efforts, and maintained one of the strongest compliance records in the industry.
Aqua’s water operations achieved a 99.91% compliance rate in 2025, significantly outperforming national drinking water quality benchmarks. The company said the result reflects its comprehensive approach to water treatment, testing, distribution, and regulatory oversight. Maintaining such a high compliance rate requires constant monitoring and coordination among scientists, engineers, operators, and field personnel responsible for ensuring water quality standards are consistently met or exceeded.
The company’s water quality operations are supported by its advanced Environmental Laboratory located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. The laboratory plays a central role in monitoring water systems, conducting testing, and supporting regulatory compliance across Aqua’s service territories. More than 1,500 Aqua employees, including water quality specialists, engineers, laboratory technicians, and field crews, work continuously to maintain safe and reliable drinking water supplies.
Essential Utilities also emphasized its leadership role in addressing PFAS contamination, one of the most significant environmental and public health challenges currently facing water providers across the United States. PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are synthetic compounds that can persist in the environment and water systems for long periods.
To address this issue, the company is implementing a multi-year capital investment program valued at approximately $450 million. The initiative is focused on upgrading treatment systems and ensuring finished drinking water remains below federal maximum contaminant levels established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for six regulated PFAS compounds.
The company stated that its PFAS remediation strategy includes the installation of advanced treatment technologies, expanded water quality monitoring, and ongoing infrastructure enhancements across its service areas. Essential Utilities said these investments are designed not only to comply with federal regulations but also to provide customers with greater confidence in the safety and reliability of their water supply.
Beyond its water operations, Essential Utilities reported broader infrastructure spending across both its regulated water and natural gas businesses. In total, the company invested approximately $1.4 billion in infrastructure improvements during 2025. Looking ahead, Essential Utilities plans to increase that figure further, committing approximately $1.7 billion toward infrastructure projects in 2026.
The company said these investments will continue to focus on replacing aging infrastructure, modernizing treatment facilities, improving resiliency, and enhancing operational efficiency across its utility networks. Modernization projects are expected to strengthen system reliability while helping communities adapt to changing environmental conditions, population growth, and evolving regulatory requirements.

Many water and wastewater systems throughout the United States were built decades ago and require significant upgrades to meet modern performance standards and environmental expectations.
