EIG Geothermal Catalyst Partners Makes First Investment

EIG Geothermal Catalyst Partners Makes First Investment in Power Planet’s Geothermal Development Portfolio

EIG, a leading institutional investor focused on the global energy and infrastructure sectors, has announced the completion of the inaugural investment by EIG Geothermal Catalyst Partners, L.P. (GCP or the Fund). The Fund has partnered with Power Planet, a geothermal development company focused on advancing enhanced geothermal system (EGS) projects in the United States.

The investment represents an important milestone for GCP and is designed to support the continued development of Power Planet’s Star Peak EGS Project, as well as the company’s broader portfolio of geothermal opportunities. Through the partnership, EIG aims to provide development capital that can help move next-generation geothermal projects through critical technical and commercial stages.

Power Planet’s Star Peak project is the company’s lead development initiative. The project is positioned to benefit from several existing assets and characteristics associated with the Star Peak geothermal field, including established geothermal infrastructure, available interconnection capacity and existing subsurface data. These advantages could help reduce development uncertainty and provide a foundation for a phased approach to bringing the project toward commercial-scale electricity generation.

The Star Peak development reflects the growing interest in EGS technology as developers and investors seek new approaches to expanding geothermal power beyond conventional resource areas. Unlike traditional geothermal projects, which generally depend on naturally occurring reservoirs with sufficient heat, permeability and fluids, EGS projects are designed to access geothermal heat in areas where natural reservoir conditions may not be sufficient for conventional development.

By leveraging subsurface engineering and reservoir technologies, EGS has the potential to expand the geographic availability of geothermal resources. This could create opportunities to develop firm electricity generation in locations where conventional geothermal projects may face limitations.

For EIG, the investment is part of a broader strategy to participate in the development of geothermal resources capable of supporting the evolving electricity system. The company believes geothermal power can play an increasingly important role as electricity demand rises and utilities, businesses and other energy consumers seek dependable sources of low-carbon power.

Geothermal generation offers several characteristics that distinguish it from many other renewable energy technologies. Because geothermal facilities can potentially operate continuously, they can provide firm generation that is not dependent on daily solar conditions or wind availability. This characteristic could become increasingly valuable as power systems integrate larger quantities of variable renewable generation and face growing demand from data centers, industrial facilities, electrification and other large electricity-consuming applications.

EIG Geothermal Catalyst Partners was established to support high-quality geothermal projects at important stages of development. The Fund is intended to provide capital that can help project sponsors address technical, development and commercial challenges before projects reach later-stage financing and construction.

The strategy also seeks to encourage greater institutional participation in the geothermal industry. Development-stage geothermal projects can require substantial capital and technical expertise before they are ready for conventional infrastructure financing. By investing earlier in the project lifecycle, GCP aims to help bridge this gap while pursuing attractive risk-adjusted returns consistent with EIG’s investment approach.

The partnership with Power Planet provides an early example of how the Fund intends to execute that strategy. Capital from the investment will support the continued advancement of Star Peak while also contributing to Power Planet’s broader development efforts.

Andrew Ellenbogen, President of EIG, said the Fund’s first investment represents a significant milestone and demonstrates the opportunity EIG sees in next-generation geothermal development in the United States.

According to Ellenbogen, Power Planet’s portfolio aligns with the Fund’s objective of providing development capital that can help geothermal projects advance through key technical and commercial milestones. He added that EIG looks forward to supporting Power Planet as the company progresses the Star Peak project and develops its wider portfolio.

Power Planet CEO Keith Elliott also highlighted the importance of the partnership. He said Star Peak offers a compelling opportunity to bring new EGS electricity to the U.S. grid and indicated that the company expects to begin delivering electricity from the project in 2027 or 2028.

Elliott said EIG’s participation has helped accelerate the project and attract additional capital for its development. The investment is expected to provide Power Planet with additional resources as it moves into the next phase of growth and works to advance its wider portfolio of geothermal projects.

The planned development timeline underscores the importance of development capital in bringing emerging geothermal technologies to market. Projects such as Star Peak must progress through multiple technical and commercial milestones before reaching full-scale operations. These can include subsurface characterization, reservoir development, engineering, permitting, interconnection and project financing.

The availability of existing infrastructure and interconnection capacity at Star Peak could provide important advantages as Power Planet works through those stages. Existing subsurface information may also help developers improve their understanding of the resource and inform future development decisions.

More broadly, the project comes as the U.S. electricity sector faces a combination of rising demand and increasing pressure to add reliable generation. The expansion of artificial intelligence and data centers, industrial electrification, manufacturing investment and broader economic growth is contributing to expectations for sustained increases in electricity consumption in several U.S. markets.

At the same time, utilities and power producers are evaluating technologies that can complement renewable resources while reducing exposure to fossil fuel generation. Geothermal power is attracting attention in this environment because it has the potential to provide firm, low-carbon electricity with a relatively small land footprint compared with some other generation technologies.

EGS could further expand that opportunity by enabling geothermal development in regions that do not have the naturally favorable conditions required by conventional geothermal facilities. Continued technological progress, however, will remain important to achieving commercial-scale deployment and demonstrating the economic performance of EGS projects.

Power Planet intends to build on the Star Peak development as part of a broader effort to accelerate EGS deployment across the United States. The company expects the partnership with EIG to provide support as it advances projects through development milestones and seeks additional capital to scale its portfolio.

The inaugural GCP investment therefore represents more than the launch of a new investment relationship. It also signals growing institutional interest in geothermal technologies and their potential role in the future U.S. power mix.

As demand for reliable electricity continues to increase, geothermal developers are seeking to demonstrate that advanced technologies such as EGS can deliver scalable, firm and low-carbon generation. With its investment in Power Planet, EIG is positioning its geothermal strategy around projects that could help address those needs while creating opportunities for long-term infrastructure investment.

The development of Star Peak will provide an important test of that strategy. If Power Planet meets its targeted 2027/2028 timeframe for initial electricity delivery, the project could become an early example of the potential for EGS technology to contribute new firm generation to the U.S. grid.

For EIG and Power Planet, the partnership establishes a foundation for continued development, additional capital formation and potential expansion of geothermal generation. The companies will now focus on advancing Star Peak and Power Planet’s broader portfolio as they seek to accelerate the deployment of enhanced geothermal systems across the country.
