Barrell Energy Acquires 44,000 Net Acres in Smackover Lithium Brine Region

Barrell Energy Expands Footprint with 44,000 Net Acres in Smackover Lithium Brine Play

Barrell Energy Inc. has announced a major milestone in its pursuit of U.S. lithium production, revealing a significant expansion of its land position in the Smackover Lithium Trend. The development follows the successful completion of a Series A funding round by its portfolio company, Barrell Lithium LLC, which has now secured 44,000 net acres in the East Texas portion of the Smackover lithium brine fairway. This achievement marks a pivotal step in the company’s strategy to establish a leading role in America’s growing domestic lithium supply chain amid accelerating demand for critical minerals.

Strengthening the U.S. Lithium Landscape

The Smackover Formation, historically known for its oil and gas reservoirs, has recently emerged as one of North America’s most promising lithium brine plays. With the electrification of transport and clean energy systems driving unprecedented lithium demand, the region’s geological potential for large-scale lithium extraction has attracted intense interest from both established and emerging operators.

By completing its Series A raise, Barrell Lithium has positioned itself among the frontrunners in this evolving resource landscape. The newly acquired 44,000 acres not only represent a vast expansion of the company’s exploration potential but also underscore investor confidence in Barrell’s technical expertise and strategic vision.

“This expansion validates our long-term commitment to the Smackover and our belief in the quality of its lithium resources,” said Kirk Barrell, President of Barrell Energy Inc. “With the successful Series A financing, we’ve achieved our primary objective—to secure a significant and contiguous acreage position in one of the most attractive lithium-bearing brine formations in the United States.”

Geological Expertise Driving Competitive Advantage

Barrell Energy’s success has been built on decades of geological and operational experience. Over the past four years, the company’s technical team has undertaken a comprehensive geological evaluation across fifteen counties in the Smackover trend. This work includes detailed analyses of lithium source rock potential, structural characteristics, reservoir quality, and lithium saturation levels—all crucial factors in determining commercial viability.

The company’s local leasing office in Atlanta, Texas serves as a hub for its regional operations. By maintaining an on-the-ground presence, Barrell has been able to build long-term relationships with landowners, streamline leasing processes, and foster community support within the region.

“Our local land team has been instrumental in this success,” Barrell added. “Their knowledge of the area, combined with our technical insights, has allowed us to move efficiently and responsibly in expanding our leasehold. It’s a model of collaboration that positions us for sustainable growth as the lithium brine industry evolves.”

Momentum Across the Smackover Play

The Smackover Formation’s lithium-rich brines have drawn increasing attention from global energy majors. Companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Equinor have all entered the play, signaling confidence in the formation’s long-term potential. These developments have accelerated land acquisition and resource delineation efforts across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas—regions underlain by the Smackover’s highly saline aquifers that host lithium concentrations favorable for extraction.

“The Smackover has rapidly become one of the most competitive plays in the U.S. for lithium brine exploration,” said Barrell. “The entrance of major operators further validates the scale and significance of this resource. Our geological understanding and targeted acreage strategy give us a meaningful advantage in pursuing high-potential prospects within the fairway.”

Barrell Energy’s growing footprint is particularly noteworthy given the increasing focus on domestic lithium supply security. With the U.S. government prioritizing the development of critical minerals to support electric vehicle production and energy storage, companies with strong technical capabilities and established land positions are poised to play central roles in the emerging lithium economy.

A Long-Term Vision for Domestic Lithium Development

Barrell Energy’s investment strategy in the Smackover reflects a broader commitment to advancing U.S.-based energy transition resources. The company envisions leveraging its geological expertise to identify and develop lithium-rich brine reservoirs capable of supporting commercial-scale extraction projects.

Beyond exploration, Barrell Energy and its subsidiaries aim to integrate emerging technologies for direct lithium extraction (DLE), a method that offers faster recovery times and lower environmental impact compared to conventional mining. While still in early stages of deployment, DLE is seen as a transformative approach that could enable the U.S. to rapidly scale domestic lithium output while minimizing water use and surface disruption.

“Our mission goes beyond acquiring land—we’re building the foundation for a long-term, sustainable lithium production platform,” Barrell explained. “By combining advanced geological science, innovative extraction technologies, and responsible development practices, we’re helping to strengthen the U.S. lithium supply chain from the ground up.”
