Babcock & Wilcox, Siemens Energy Begin 20 Steam Turbine Projects

Babcock & Wilcox and Siemens Energy Advance 1 GW Steam Turbine Program for Data Center Power

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (B&W) (NYSE: BW) has signed an agreement with Siemens Energy to begin work on 20 Siemens Energy steam turbine generator sets with a combined generating capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW). The equipment will support B&W’s FastPower℠ program, which is designed to help meet the rapidly increasing electricity requirements of data center projects.

The agreement represents another step in B&W’s efforts to develop and deliver large-scale power generation solutions for data centers and other customers facing rapidly growing electricity demand. It also expands B&W’s collaboration with Siemens Energy, building on a previously announced turbine order connected to B&W’s data center power initiatives.

The companies’ latest agreement comes as electricity demand from data centers continues to rise, driven in large part by artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, high-performance computing and the expansion of digital infrastructure. These facilities require substantial amounts of dependable electricity, often creating challenges for developers seeking to bring new generation capacity online within compressed project timelines.

Under the agreement, the 20 steam turbine generator sets will provide a total of 1 GW of generating capacity. The equipment is intended to form an important part of B&W’s FastPower program, which focuses on accelerating the deployment of reliable power generation infrastructure for customers with urgent energy requirements.

Brandy Johnson, Chief Technology Officer at B&W, said the agreement strengthens the company’s relationship with Siemens Energy while helping B&W respond to increasing demand for dependable, utility-scale power generation.

“As demand for dependable, large-scale power generation continues to accelerate, particularly from AI data center customers, we are strengthening our collaboration with Siemens Energy through this agreement,” Johnson said. “This order secures 1 GW of capacity and further positions us to deliver reliable, high-capacity energy solutions on the accelerated timelines our customers require.”

The agreement gives B&W additional turbine capacity to support its growing pipeline of projects. As data center developers continue to seek new power sources, the availability of generation equipment has become an increasingly important factor in determining project schedules. By securing turbine equipment and combining it with its engineering and project delivery capabilities, B&W aims to help customers move more quickly from project planning to power generation.

Responding to Rapidly Growing Power Demand

The growth of AI has significantly increased attention on the amount of electricity required by modern data centers. Advanced computing systems, large-scale cloud platforms and AI workloads can require substantial and continuous power. As a result, data center developers are increasingly examining a range of generation technologies and power procurement strategies to ensure that sufficient electricity is available when facilities become operational.

B&W believes its FastPower program can play a role in addressing this challenge by providing customers with power generation solutions designed around accelerated deployment schedules. The company combines generation technology with engineering, equipment integration and project execution capabilities to develop solutions for customers that need dependable electricity.

“B&W is focused on helping customers meet one of today’s most critical challenges: bringing reliable power online as quickly as possible,” Johnson said. “By combining our proven generation technologies, deep engineering expertise and decades of project execution experience, we are uniquely positioned to deliver fast-track energy solutions that support rapidly growing power demands.”

The company said it has a strong pipeline of near-term opportunities involving data centers and power generation. The latest turbine agreement is intended to strengthen B&W’s ability to respond to those opportunities while helping customers maintain the reliability and performance standards expected from large-scale power infrastructure.

The need for speed is particularly important for data center developers. Construction of computing facilities can progress rapidly, but power availability can become a constraint when grid connections, transmission upgrades or new generation projects require lengthy development periods. Equipment procurement can also affect project schedules, making early access to major generation components increasingly valuable.

By working with Siemens Energy on 20 steam turbine generator sets, B&W is seeking to create additional capacity that can be incorporated into future power projects. The combined 1 GW represents a substantial amount of generating capability and could support multiple large-scale facilities or power projects depending on individual project configurations.

Siemens Energy Partnership

Siemens Energy’s involvement provides B&W with access to established steam turbine and generator technology. The company has a long history of supplying equipment for conventional and industrial power generation applications and continues to support customers seeking dependable generation infrastructure.

Tobias Panse, Senior Vice President of Steam Turbines and Generators at Siemens Energy, said the agreement reflects broader changes in the U.S. energy market, where demand is increasing for reliable and resilient power infrastructure.

“Siemens Energy’s agreement with Babcock & Wilcox to commence work on these steam turbine generator sets reflects a broader trend we are currently seeing in the U.S. market: growing demand for reliable, affordable, and resilient energy infrastructure,” Panse said.

Panse added that Siemens Energy is responding to the market environment through its steam turbine technology, execution capabilities and long-term relationships with customers.

The partnership is significant because steam turbine generator sets remain an important component of large-scale electricity generation. When integrated into suitable generation systems, steam turbines can provide continuous power and support applications where reliability and stable output are critical.

For B&W, the collaboration complements its broader power generation capabilities and its experience delivering equipment and services to customers around the world.

Leveraging Global Power Generation Experience

B&W brings decades of experience in the power generation sector to the initiative. The company said its technologies have been deployed across thousands of installations globally, giving it a broad base of technical and project execution experience.

That background is increasingly relevant as data center operators and other electricity-intensive industries seek scalable generation solutions. Large facilities require power systems that can operate reliably over extended periods, while developers also need solutions that can be integrated into project schedules and adapted to individual site requirements.

B&W intends to leverage its engineering expertise, proven generation technologies and project delivery capabilities as it expands its FastPower program. The company’s approach is focused on combining equipment, engineering and execution capabilities to provide customers with power solutions that can be deployed efficiently.

The latest agreement with Siemens Energy therefore represents more than the procurement of additional turbine equipment. It strengthens the foundation for B&W’s strategy of addressing emerging demand for rapidly deployable power generation, particularly in the data center market.

Supporting the Next Phase of Data Center Growth

The expansion of data centers is expected to remain closely connected to the availability of electricity. AI development, cloud services, digital applications and high-performance computing are increasing the amount of infrastructure required to process and store data. At the same time, energy developers and utilities are working to expand generation and transmission capacity to accommodate new demand.

Against this backdrop, B&W’s 1 GW agreement with Siemens Energy provides additional equipment capacity for its FastPower program. The 20 steam turbine generator sets will give the company greater flexibility as it evaluates and advances upcoming data center and power generation opportunities.

The agreement also highlights the growing importance of partnerships across the power industry. Combining B&W’s engineering and project execution experience with Siemens Energy’s steam turbine technology allows the companies to address projects that require both substantial generating capacity and accelerated implementation.

As electricity demand continues to grow, particularly from AI-driven data centers, projects capable of delivering reliable power within compressed schedules are likely to remain a priority for developers and energy companies. B&W’s expanded turbine program positions the company to participate in that market while building on its established power generation experience.

With 20 Siemens Energy steam turbine generator sets and 1 GW of combined capacity now included in the latest agreement, B&W is strengthening its ability to support customers seeking dependable large-scale electricity. The initiative reinforces the company’s FastPower strategy and reflects the broader transformation taking place across the U.S. power market as data centers and other energy-intensive industries drive demand for new generation infrastructure.
