Graanul Invest Appoints Lars Christian Bacher as CEO to Accelerate European Growth

AS Graanul Invest, one of Europe’s leading producers of sustainable wood pellets for renewable power and heat generation, has announced the appointment of energy industry veteran Lars Christian Bacher as its new Chief Executive Officer. Bacher will officially assume the role on May 18, marking a significant leadership transition for the company as it seeks to strengthen its position in Europe’s rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Graanul, which has been expanding its role in supporting Europe’s energy transition and energy security objectives. The company supplies sustainable biomass fuel to utilities and industrial customers that rely on renewable, dispatchable power and heat generation. As European governments continue to prioritize low-carbon energy systems and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, biomass and wood pellet production are becoming increasingly important components of the continent’s broader energy mix.

Graanul said Bacher’s extensive international experience in the energy industry will help guide the company through its next phase of growth. His leadership is expected to support Graanul’s strategic ambitions as it continues expanding operations across Europe and strengthening relationships with major utility customers.

Bacher succeeds Nicholas Dottino, who has served as Chief Executive and helped steer the company through a period of operational development and strategic growth. Dottino will continue to support the business during the leadership transition and will subsequently move into a new advisory role with Apollo, focusing on infrastructure and energy investments.

The leadership change reflects Graanul’s intention to further scale its operations and deepen its contribution to renewable energy production across the continent. The company has increasingly positioned itself as a key supplier of sustainable biomass solutions at a time when energy security, grid reliability, and decarbonization remain top priorities for governments and energy providers.

Bacher joins Graanul with decades of experience in the global energy sector. He previously spent many years at Norwegian multinational energy company Equinor, where he held several senior executive positions and was a member of the company’s Executive Committee for more than eight years.

During his tenure at Equinor, Bacher served as Chief Financial Officer for two years. In that role, he oversaw financial operations, capital allocation strategies, and long-term business planning for one of the world’s largest energy companies. His responsibilities included managing the company’s financial performance during a period of transformation in global energy markets, while also helping shape strategic priorities connected to future growth and energy transition initiatives.

Prior to becoming CFO, Bacher held the role of Executive Vice President for Development and Production International at Statoil ASA, the former name of Equinor. In that position, he managed a wide range of operational and strategic responsibilities, including international production activities, capital expenditure planning, geographic expansion initiatives, operational efficiency programs, and organizational development efforts. He also oversaw areas related to safety, security, and corporate culture across the company’s international portfolio.

Bacher’s broad experience across upstream energy operations, finance, and international business development is expected to provide Graanul with strong leadership capabilities as it navigates changing energy market dynamics and rising demand for renewable energy solutions.

Most recently, Bacher served as Chief Executive Officer of Morrow Batteries between 2022 and 2025. At Morrow Batteries, he played a key role in advancing battery manufacturing and energy storage initiatives aimed at supporting Europe’s growing electrification and decarbonization efforts. His leadership experience in both conventional and renewable energy sectors positions him uniquely to lead Graanul as biomass continues to gain importance within Europe’s renewable energy framework.

Commenting on the appointment, Brad Fierstein, Chair of Graanul’s Supervisory Board and Partner at Apollo Global Management, said the company is pleased to welcome a leader with Bacher’s extensive experience and industry knowledge.

Fierstein noted that Graanul is entering an important stage of growth and development, and that Bacher’s leadership will help accelerate the company’s long-term strategy while reinforcing its role within the European energy market. He also thanked outgoing CEO Nicholas Dottino for his contributions and achievements during his time leading the company.

According to Fierstein, Graanul remains focused on supporting Europe’s transition toward cleaner and more secure energy systems. Sustainable biomass, including wood pellets, continues to play an important role in balancing renewable electricity generation and providing dispatchable energy solutions that complement intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar power.

Under Bacher’s leadership, the company is expected to continue investing in operational efficiency, supply chain reliability, and sustainable sourcing practices. Graanul operates production facilities across the Baltics and the United States, supplying renewable biomass fuel to utilities and industrial customers throughout Europe.

The company’s wood pellets are primarily used in electricity and heat generation, helping utilities reduce carbon emissions while maintaining stable energy supply. Biomass energy has become an increasingly important part of Europe’s renewable energy strategy, particularly as governments seek alternatives to coal and other fossil fuels.

Incoming CEO Lars Christian Bacher said he is excited to join Graanul at what he described as a critical moment for Europe’s energy landscape. He emphasized the company’s role in supporting European energy security and highlighted the importance of delivering reliable renewable energy solutions to customers across the region.

Bacher also expressed enthusiasm about working with Graanul’s leadership team and employees as the company continues serving major utility customers throughout Europe. He noted the importance of collaboration across the company’s production facilities in the Baltics and the United States, which form a central part of Graanul’s international supply network.

The appointment comes amid increasing attention on Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure and the need for dependable low-carbon energy sources. As countries across the continent accelerate decarbonization targets and seek greater energy independence, companies involved in renewable fuel production are expected to play an increasingly prominent role in the energy transition.

Graanul’s leadership transition signals confidence in the long-term growth potential of sustainable biomass and renewable heating solutions. With Bacher’s extensive background in energy operations, finance, and strategic development, the company aims to strengthen its market position while continuing to contribute to Europe’s evolving energy security and climate objectives.

The move also highlights the growing intersection between traditional energy expertise and renewable energy development, as companies seek experienced leadership capable of navigating both industrial operations and the transition toward cleaner energy systems.
