Ameren Lineworkers Gear Up for the International Lineman’s Rodeo
Dozens of Ameren lineworkers, apprentices, and judges are heading to Bonner Springs, Kansas, this week for the 41st annual International Lineman’s Rodeo. Often referred to as the “Lineman Olympics,” this premier event brings together top talent from around the world to compete in challenges that test skill, precision, speed, and safety. For Ameren’s teams, it’s an opportunity to showcase the expertise and dedication that keep the electric grid running reliably for millions of customers.
Ameren Missouri is sending a strong contingent of 12 lineworkers, eight apprentices, and 17 judges and committee members. Meanwhile, Ameren Illinois will be represented by 21 lineworkers, six apprentices, and 10 judges and committee members. Beyond the competition itself, the rodeo also offers families a chance to witness the skills that make lineworkers essential to daily life, highlighting the commitment, courage, and technical knowledge required in this demanding profession.
“Ameren’s lineworkers and apprentices are deeply dedicated to their craft,” said Tim Lafser, senior vice president of energy delivery, operations, and technical services for Ameren Missouri. “The International Lineman’s Rodeo gives them a platform to demonstrate their skill, precision, and teamwork—representing Ameren and the communities we serve. Competing alongside the nation’s best, they tackle challenges that reflect the critical work they do every day to keep the energy grid safe and reliable for our customers.”
The rodeo’s events are designed to mirror real-world tasks lineworkers face in the field. Competitors will take on challenges such as the Hurtman Rescue, which tests emergency response skills; the Pole Climb contest, which evaluates speed and technique; and two mystery events designed around everyday linework scenarios. Each event is scored on speed, accuracy, and adherence to strict safety standards. Apprentices participate in these same competitions while also completing a written examination to demonstrate their technical knowledge.
For Ameren, the rodeo is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of teamwork and professional excellence. Participants often train for months leading up to the event, fine-tuning their techniques, practicing under timed conditions, and reviewing safety procedures. The intense preparation mirrors the dedication lineworkers bring to their daily responsibilities, whether restoring power after storms or performing maintenance on critical infrastructure.
Ameren teams have a strong tradition of success at the rodeo. In 2024, a trio from Ameren Illinois—Jason Novak, Clayton Gulley, and Austin Lewis—captured the top prize, earning the title of best-of-the-best among more than 255 competing teams. Their performance included two second-place awards in individual events, showcasing both technical skill and exceptional teamwork.
“Jason, Austin, and Clayton’s pursuit of a second consecutive championship reflects teamwork, training, and the highest standards of safety in the field—values that drive our entire organization each and every day,” said Luke Wollin, vice president of electric operations for Ameren Illinois. “Their success demonstrates what is possible when dedication meets preparation, and it sets a benchmark for all of our lineworkers and apprentices to aspire to.”
For families and spectators, the International Lineman’s Rodeo is an exciting and educational experience. It provides an inside look at the complex and sometimes dangerous work lineworkers perform, highlighting the expertise required to maintain a reliable power system. Visitors can witness firsthand the precision involved in climbing poles, rescuing injured colleagues, and performing technical tasks under pressure.
As the competition kicks off, Ameren lineworkers and apprentices will be challenged to push their skills to the limit, balancing speed with strict adherence to safety protocols. Each participant carries not only their own aspirations but also the pride of representing Ameren and the communities they serve. The event underscores the critical role lineworkers play in keeping the lights on and the grid secure, reminding the public of the dedication and expertise behind every service connection.
Whether seasoned veterans or up-and-coming apprentices, Ameren’s teams are ready to compete, learn, and demonstrate the values that define the organization: safety, skill, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. The 41st International Lineman’s Rodeo promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent, with Ameren proudly standing among the top performers in the natio
