Avangrid Employees Exceed Volunteer Goals, Contributing Over 37,000 Hours to Communities in 2024
The Avangrid Foundation, the charitable arm of Avangrid Inc., a leading sustainable energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, has announced that its employees have volunteered more than 37,000 hours in 2024, exceeding the company’s goal by nearly 50%. This achievement not only highlights the company’s dedication to community involvement but also reflects its longstanding commitment to making a positive impact in the regions it serves.
This is a particularly significant milestone for Avangrid, as it has dramatically increased its volunteer efforts over the last few years. Since the company began tracking volunteer hours in 2021, the amount of time its employees have devoted to charitable activities has grown exponentially, increasing tenfold. In fact, the company surpassed its initial 2025 goal of 35,000 volunteer hours one year ahead of schedule.
Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, expressed immense pride in the achievement. “This is a remarkable accomplishment, and I couldn’t be happier for the 8,000 dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to serve their communities. In addition to helping power millions of homes and businesses across the Northeast and beyond, these employees are truly raising the bar when it comes to giving back. They have grown our volunteer hours by nearly 60 percent compared to last year, which is an incredible feat. I have no doubt that this momentum will continue as we expand our positive influence in the communities we are privileged to serve.”
The impact of Avangrid’s employees’ volunteer work was felt across 26 states, with employees actively supporting 737 different organizations in various charitable endeavors. These volunteer efforts span a wide range of causes, including education, food security, housing, and environmental protection. In addition to the volunteer hours contributed, the Avangrid Foundation further amplified the impact of these efforts through its Energized for Good program.
The Energized for Good program is an initiative designed to support nonprofit organizations by matching employee volunteer work with financial donations. Through this program, the Avangrid Foundation donates $15 for every hour an employee volunteers, up to a maximum of 100 hours per employee. This resulted in more than $341,567 in contributions to local nonprofit organizations in 2024. By pairing employee volunteer hours with financial support, the Avangrid Foundation maximized the positive impact on communities throughout the company’s service areas.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to see the lasting impact our employees have made through their volunteer work this year,” said Pablo Colón, director of corporate citizenship and executive director of the Avangrid Foundation. “Their dedication has not only helped strengthen communities but has also supported essential organizations that tackle issues such as food insecurity, housing, education, wildlife conservation, and other critical needs.”
Among the many volunteer activities carried out by Avangrid employees in 2024, several notable projects stand out for their breadth and importance to the communities served by the company:
Supporting the American Red Cross
Avangrid employees continued their longstanding support for the American Red Cross by hosting 11 blood drives across Connecticut, Maine, and New York. These drives collectively collected over 200 pints of critically needed blood. Given the importance of maintaining a steady supply of blood for hospitals and emergency services, these efforts were especially significant in ensuring the availability of life-saving resources for those in need.
Building Homes with Habitat for Humanity
Access to affordable housing remains a pressing issue in many of the regions where Avangrid operates. In response, 177 Avangrid employees volunteered to participate in 19 build days with Habitat for Humanity. These volunteers contributed to the construction of homes for families in need across Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, and Texas. By taking part in these efforts, employees were directly involved in addressing the housing crisis and helping deserving families achieve the dream of homeownership.
Combating Food Insecurity
Avangrid employees demonstrated an unwavering commitment to addressing food insecurity by organizing 57 events across the company’s service areas. More than 577 volunteers worked in food pantries, food banks, urban farms, and other local organizations dedicated to alleviating hunger. These volunteer efforts were crucial in ensuring that individuals and families facing food insecurity received the support they needed.
Providing School Supplies for Students
Avangrid employees also took action to address the challenges faced by under-resourced schools. With many classrooms struggling to provide essential materials for students, employees collected over 2,300 school supplies in support of the Kids in Need Foundation. This initiative helped provide the necessary tools for children to succeed in their education and demonstrated the company’s commitment to investing in the future of the communities it serves.
Fostering Education and Career Development
Education is one of the most impactful ways to ensure long-term community development, and Avangrid employees embraced this cause wholeheartedly. Over 400 employees participated in 47 events focused on education, ranging from career fairs and science center activities to museum visits and supply drives. These volunteer events allowed employees to share their knowledge and expertise with local students, encouraging them to pursue their academic and career aspirations.
These are just a few examples of the many ways in which Avangrid employees have given back to their communities in 2024. The company’s focus on volunteerism not only strengthens the fabric of the communities where it operates but also fosters a sense of purpose and pride among its employees. Through their volunteer efforts, Avangrid employees have proven that they are not only committed to providing clean, sustainable energy but also to building a brighter, more equitable future for everyone.
As Avangrid looks ahead to the coming years, the company remains dedicated to continuing and expanding its efforts to support local communities. The 37,000 volunteer hours in 2024 are just the beginning, and Avangrid’s leadership is confident that the company’s employees will continue to make a significant difference in the lives of those around them. Through the combined efforts of the company, the Avangrid Foundation, and its employees, Avangrid is well-positioned to continue making a positive impact for years to come.
In conclusion, Avangrid’s record-breaking volunteer efforts in 2024 stand as a testament to the power of community engagement and the dedication of its employees. By exceeding its volunteer hour goals and contributing both time and resources to critical causes, Avangrid has demonstrated its commitment to creating lasting change. As the company moves forward, it remains focused on further amplifying its positive impact and empowering its employees to make a difference in the communities they serve.
