Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), a prominent sustainable energy provider and part of the Iberdrola Group, has been recognized once again as one of the top two public utilities in the U.S. for decarbonization, according to the National Public Utilities Council’s (NPUC) Annual Utility Decarbonization Report. This annual assessment analyzes the decarbonization efforts of major investor-owned utilities across the nation. For the second consecutive year, Avangrid secured the second overall position.
“When it comes to decarbonization, Avangrid is leading by example,” said Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid. “We are proud to be recognized again by the NPUC as a top company for decarbonization, which further validates our commitment to combatting climate change and fostering a more sustainable and equitable future.” He emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts in advancing the clean energy transition through the expansion of its renewable energy portfolio, investments in network infrastructure and grid modernization, and a focus on the well-being of customers, employees, and communities.
Avangrid achieved the highest scores in five of the six evaluation categories, ranking first for both the lowest CO2 emissions from owned and purchased electricity generation and the lowest CO2 emissions per residential customer equivalent (RCE). The company reported just 0.3 metric tons of CO2 emissions per customer, significantly lower than the average of 5.7 metric tons for the investor-owned utilities evaluated in the NPUC report.
The NPUC publishes the Utility Decarbonization Report annually to promote the swift decarbonization of the utility sector through data-informed analysis. Utilities are ranked based on six key metrics that consider their fuel mix, carbon emissions, decarbonization goals, and investments in carbon-free solutions. The report aims to assess how well utilities are progressing toward net-zero emissions relative to their peers.
Avangrid is committed to an ambitious carbon neutrality strategy aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) milestones, which also includes Iberdrola’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. In addition to its strong ranking in the NPUC report, Avangrid’s dedication to decarbonization has earned it accolades such as being named one of America’s Most Just Companies 2024, one of America’s Climate Leaders 2024, and the Most Sustainable Company in the Clean Energy Industry.
