Powin LLC to Provide Advanced Battery Technology for DTE Energy Storage Center
Powin LLC, a leading global energy storage platform provider, has announced today that it will supply its advanced battery storage technology to support DTE Energy’s new energy storage center in Michigan. This center will be located at the site of DTE’s retired Trenton Channel Power Plant, a century-old coal-fired facility. Powin’s state-of-the-art 880 megawatt-hour system aims to deliver reliable, emission-free power to DTE’s 2.3 million electric customers in southeast Michigan.
The project has been approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission and forms a significant part of DTE’s CleanVision plan to achieve net zero emissions. By integrating Powin’s battery energy storage system, DTE will take a substantial step towards more than doubling its total energy storage capacity, while supporting Michigan’s target of achieving 2.5GW of energy storage capacity by 2030.
Transitioning to clean energy is critical for addressing the climate crisis and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, wind and solar accounted for 14% of U.S. electricity generation in 2022, with expectations to rise to 18% in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for accelerated adoption of clean energy solutions. Projects like the Trenton Channel Energy Center illustrate the pivotal role that energy storage will play in scaling up sustainable energy alternatives.
“We are privileged to have been chosen by DTE as their trusted partner for this initiative,” stated Jeff Waters, CEO of Powin. “This project serves as a beacon for the utility sector, showcasing the potential and impact of advanced energy storage solutions in advancing a sustainable energy future.”
Powin’s selection for this project was driven by its comprehensive energy storage solutions, encompassing integrated hardware, advanced software controls, and extensive service offerings.
“DTE’s Trenton Channel Energy Center will significantly benefit from Powin’s cutting-edge technologies,” remarked Matt Paul, President and Chief Operating Officer of DTE Electric. “This project holds great importance for our customers and communities, and we are pleased to collaborate with Powin to bring it to fruition and move closer to our cleaner energy objectives.”
The Trenton Channel Energy Center is expected to become operational by 2026, positioning it among the largest standalone battery projects in the region.
