Baker Hughes Launches Global Network to Unlock Value from Mature Oil and Gas Assets
Baker Hughes, an energy technology company, has announced the launch of its global Mature Assets Solutions (MAS) hub network, an initiative designed to help oil and gas operators maximize the value of existing fields and extend the productive life of mature assets. The new network will bring together regional expertise, advanced technologies and digital capabilities to address the operational and economic challenges associated with aging oil and gas infrastructure.
The announcement comes as mature oil and gas fields continue to play an important role in meeting global energy demand. Industry forecasts estimate that mature assets will account for approximately 80% of worldwide oil and gas production by 2030. As operators increasingly focus on optimizing existing resources alongside developing new projects, solutions that improve recovery rates, increase operational efficiency and extend asset lifecycles are becoming increasingly important.
Through the MAS hub network, Baker Hughes aims to provide operators with integrated solutions tailored to the specific requirements of mature fields. The initiative will focus on improving production performance, extending the operational life of existing assets and identifying responsible and economically viable opportunities for retiring or repurposing oil and gas wells.
The connected network will operate across several important markets for mature asset development. It will include customer collaboration centers in the United States, Brazil, Norway, Angola, major energy hubs across the Middle East and Malaysia. These locations will provide operators with access to Baker Hughes specialists, engineering capabilities and technology solutions designed to address challenges throughout the lifecycle of mature oil and gas assets.
The hubs will also create opportunities for closer collaboration between customers and Baker Hughes teams. By bringing together expertise from different regions and technical disciplines, the company intends to support the development of solutions that reflect local operating conditions while drawing on experience and knowledge gained from other oil and gas producing regions.
Amerino Gatti, Executive Vice President of Oilfield Services & Equipment at Baker Hughes, said operators are increasingly looking toward their existing oil and gas portfolios to support production requirements. He noted that these assets present increasingly complex technical and operational challenges, making innovative approaches necessary to maintain performance and improve economic returns.
Gatti explained that the Mature Assets Solutions hubs would connect Baker Hughes’ regional and global capabilities with customer knowledge and operational experience. This approach is intended to produce outcome-based solutions that optimize asset value throughout their operating lifecycles. He also highlighted the continuing importance of mature oil and gas fields in supporting global energy security over the coming decades.
The MAS hubs will function as central collaboration locations where customers can work directly with Baker Hughes specialists across several areas of the energy value chain. These include subsurface operations, wellbore technologies, surface facilities and artificial intelligence. Combining these capabilities will enable the company to develop integrated approaches that address production limitations, recovery challenges and broader operational requirements.
Subsurface expertise will support operators in understanding reservoir conditions and identifying opportunities to improve hydrocarbon recovery. Wellbore technologies will help address challenges associated with aging wells, including production optimization, intervention requirements and well integrity. Surface facility capabilities will contribute to improving the performance of existing infrastructure, while artificial intelligence and digital technologies will support operational analysis and decision-making.
By integrating these technical disciplines, Baker Hughes aims to help customers evaluate mature assets more comprehensively rather than addressing individual operational problems separately. The approach is intended to align technical recommendations with each operator’s production targets, economic objectives and long-term asset management strategies.
An important feature of the global network will be the exchange of knowledge, technologies and operational approaches between regions. The connected hubs will allow Baker Hughes to share expertise developed in one producing basin with customers facing similar challenges in another. This structure is expected to support the wider application of successful technologies and operating practices across different geographical markets.
For operators, the ability to access experience from multiple regions could help identify new approaches to improving recovery, managing production decline and reducing the costs associated with maintaining older infrastructure. It will also provide a framework for collaboration on complex projects that require coordinated expertise across reservoir engineering, well services, production systems and digital technologies.
Baker Hughes has an established history of delivering integrated technology solutions for mature oil and gas fields. Its existing customer projects demonstrate how combining specialized services and engineering capabilities can help operators improve production performance and manage aging assets more effectively.
In Pakistan, Baker Hughes recently began a multi-year Mature Assets Solutions project with Oil & Gas Development Company (OGDC). The project focuses on optimizing production and recovery across more than 120 wells in the country’s mature oil and gas fields. Through the initiative, the companies are working to identify opportunities to improve existing well performance and maximize the production potential of established assets.
The project reflects the importance of applying integrated solutions across multiple wells rather than focusing exclusively on individual production challenges. By combining technical expertise and asset-specific assessments, the initiative aims to support improved recovery and more efficient management of OGDC’s existing oil and gas resources.
In Kuwait, Baker Hughes is collaborating with Kuwait Oil Company on an integrated polymer-flood pilot program covering 11 wells. The program is designed to optimize hydrocarbon recovery through the application of polymer flooding technology. This enhanced oil recovery approach can help improve reservoir performance by modifying the properties of injected water and supporting more effective displacement of oil within the reservoir.
The pilot program provides an opportunity to evaluate the technology under field conditions and assess its potential contribution to improving recovery from mature assets. Integrated technical support and operational collaboration are central to the project as the companies work toward their production and recovery objectives.
In Brazil, Baker Hughes has also collaborated with Petrobras on an integrated workover and well abandonment project. The initiative demonstrates the company’s capabilities in managing both the operational requirements of existing wells and the technical challenges associated with their eventual retirement.
During the first year of the project, Baker Hughes delivered subsea well abandonment times of fewer than 20 days. According to the company, these results represented some of the fastest subsea well abandonment operations in Petrobras’ history. The performance highlights the potential benefits of integrated planning, specialized equipment and coordinated execution in complex offshore environments.
Well abandonment is an important part of responsible mature asset management, particularly as operators evaluate fields approaching the end of their productive lives. Efficient abandonment operations can help manage costs while supporting the safe and responsible retirement of infrastructure that is no longer economically viable.
Through its global Mature Assets Solutions hub network, Baker Hughes intends to build on these project experiences and expand access to integrated technologies and expertise across additional markets. The initiative brings together production optimization, recovery enhancement, digital capabilities and well lifecycle management within a connected operating framework.
As mature fields account for an increasingly significant share of global oil and gas production, operators face the challenge of balancing production requirements, operational costs and responsible asset management. Baker Hughes’ new network is designed to support these priorities by helping customers identify opportunities to improve existing assets, extend productive lifetimes and manage end-of-life operations.
The launch reinforces Baker Hughes’ focus on providing technology-led solutions for the evolving oil and gas industry. By connecting regional customer collaboration centers with global engineering and digital expertise, the company aims to help operators unlock additional value from existing resources while supporting the continued reliability and efficiency of energy production.
