Gazprom Expands Gas and Power Capacity in Eastern Russia
Gazprom is continuing to expand and modernize gas transmission infrastructure and power generation capacity across eastern Russia, supporting growing demand from households, industrial facilities and electricity-generating assets in the region. The company is advancing several major infrastructure projects involving gas pipelines, compressor stations, gas distribution facilities and thermal power plants, with the aim of strengthening energy supplies in the Khabarovsk and Primorye territories, the Amur Region and Yakutia.
A key element of the ongoing work is the development of infrastructure associated with the Sakhalin–Khabarovsk–Vladivostok gas trunkline. Gazprom is implementing measures to increase the flowrate of the Sakhalin main compressor station while also constructing additional compressor facilities. Among the new stations are the Khabarovskaya and Dalnerechenskaya compressor stations, which are intended to increase the reliability and capacity of the regional gas transmission system.
The expansion of compressor infrastructure is being accompanied by the construction of gas pipeline branches and gas distribution stations (GDSs). These facilities extend from the main gas trunkline and are designed to deliver natural gas to consumers in the Khabarovsk and Primorye territories. The projects are intended to provide additional gas supplies to existing consumers while also supporting newly developed power generation facilities.
Among the major future recipients of gas from these pipeline branches are CHPP-4 in Khabarovsk and Artyomovskaya CHPP-2 in the Primorye Territory. Both combined heat and power plants are being constructed by RusHydro and are expected to become important components of the regional power and heating infrastructure.
The gas pipeline branch and gas distribution station serving Artyomovskaya CHPP-2 have already been completed and are ready for launch. Their completion represents an important step in establishing the fuel supply infrastructure required for the new generating facility. Once operational, the gas supply system will provide the plant with access to natural gas transported through the regional trunkline network.
Gazprom is also upgrading existing gas distribution infrastructure in the Primorye Territory. In Vladivostok, the company is carrying out a technical upgrade of the active GDS-1. The modernization is intended to increase the station’s ability to supply gas to consumers and accommodate additional demand from facilities across the city.
A major beneficiary of the upgraded infrastructure is expected to be Vladivostok CHPP-2, which serves as a key source of both heat and electricity for the city. Increasing the availability of natural gas for the plant can support the operation of the city’s energy infrastructure and provide additional capacity to meet consumer requirements.
The expansion of gas transmission infrastructure is also closely connected with Gazprom’s development of power generation capacity elsewhere in eastern Russia. The Power of Siberia gas pipeline serves, among other facilities, generating assets belonging to the Gazprom Group. These include the Svobodny thermal power plant (TPP) in the Amur Region and the Yuzhno-Yakutsk TPP in Yakutia.
Gazprom is continuing construction and commissioning activities at both facilities. At the Svobodny TPP, the company is building a second power unit. The additional generating capacity is expected to contribute to electricity supplies in the eastern part of Russia’s power system.
At the Yuzhno-Yakutsk TPP, Gazprom is completing the work necessary to launch the first set of equipment. The facility is another component of the company’s broader efforts to develop generation infrastructure supported by natural gas supplies transported through the Power of Siberia system.
The development of these power plants is significant for the Integrated Power System of the East, where additional generating capacity is required to support regional electricity demand. By linking gas supply infrastructure with new generation assets, Gazprom is developing an interconnected network that combines fuel transportation and electricity production capabilities.
Another major project underway is the Belogorsk–Khabarovsk gas pipeline. Gazprom is constructing the pipeline to establish a connection between the Sakhalin–Khabarovsk–Vladivostok and Power of Siberia gas trunklines. The interconnection is designed to strengthen the flexibility of the regional gas transmission system and improve opportunities for moving gas between major pipeline routes.
Construction of the Belogorsk–Khabarovsk pipeline has reached a high level of completion. Its construction readiness is currently above 90 percent, while its technological connection to the Sakhalin–Khabarovsk–Vladivostok gas trunkline has already been established.
The connection represents an important milestone in the development of the eastern Russian gas network. Once the remaining construction and commissioning activities are completed, the new pipeline will provide an additional link between major gas transmission routes, supporting the broader integration of the regional system.
Gazprom’s ongoing infrastructure program therefore covers multiple stages of the energy supply chain. New and upgraded compressor stations are being developed to increase transmission capacity, while pipeline branches and gas distribution stations are being constructed to deliver fuel directly to consumers. At the same time, gas-fired power generation projects are being advanced in several regions, creating additional demand for the expanding transmission network.
The projects in Khabarovsk, Primorye, the Amur Region and Yakutia collectively demonstrate the company’s continuing focus on expanding energy infrastructure in eastern Russia. The combination of new pipelines, upgraded gas distribution facilities and additional thermal generation capacity is intended to strengthen the region’s energy system and provide infrastructure capable of supporting future consumption.
As construction and commissioning activities progress, the completion of projects such as the Belogorsk–Khabarovsk pipeline, Artyomovskaya CHPP-2 gas supply facilities and new generating units will further develop the links between gas production, transmission and power generation. Gazprom’s work on these assets forms part of a wider effort to expand the capacity and connectivity of eastern Russia’s energy infrastructure.
