TotalEnergies and Mistral Advance AI Program for Reservoir Exploration

TotalEnergies and Mistral have announced a three-year joint program designed to develop advanced artificial intelligence models for oil and gas exploration, reservoir characterization and engineering. The initiative represents an investment of more than €100 million and will focus on creating a new generation of frontier AI models capable of supporting TotalEnergies’ geoscience specialists as they evaluate subsurface resources and make decisions concerning reservoir development.

The partnership brings together TotalEnergies’ extensive experience in geosciences and reservoir engineering with Mistral’s artificial intelligence research and technology capabilities. By combining these areas of expertise, the companies aim to develop AI-based tools capable of processing large volumes of complex subsurface information and generating scenarios that can assist specialists in evaluating exploration opportunities and optimizing existing assets.

Combining Artificial Intelligence With Subsurface Expertise

A central objective of the program is to apply the latest developments in artificial intelligence, including agentic AI, to the analysis of subsurface data. TotalEnergies plans to contribute data and knowledge accumulated through almost a century of activity in geosciences and reservoir engineering.

The companies said the initiative will bring together nearly 10 petaflops of data with TotalEnergies’ accumulated technical knowledge and operational experience. This combination is intended to enable AI systems to process and interpret large and complex datasets associated with oil and gas reservoirs.

Subsurface analysis typically involves information from multiple technical disciplines, including geology, geophysics, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. The ability to evaluate these datasets together can be important when companies are assessing the characteristics of a reservoir, determining development strategies or managing existing production assets.
