Avangrid Advances New York Grid Modernization with Fraser Substation Expansion

Avangrid’s electricity distribution subsidiary New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has completed upgrades to the Fraser substation in New York State, marking the first phase of a broader project designed to reinforce the electricity network serving the southern Oneonta area.

The Fraser substation modernization is part of NYSEG’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the regional power system, improve reliability and prepare the network for future electricity demand. The completed work expands the substation’s high-voltage capabilities and provides additional infrastructure for connecting transmission facilities in the area.

As part of the project, NYSEG has constructed a new 115-kilovolt (kV) substation yard at the Fraser facility. The new yard is designed to accommodate connections from several high-voltage transmission lines, increasing the network’s ability to move electricity between transmission and distribution infrastructure and other substations serving the region.

The expansion is intended to provide greater flexibility in how electricity is transferred through the local network. By strengthening connections between key infrastructure assets, the project is expected to support more reliable electricity delivery to residential and commercial customers in the southern Oneonta area.

NYSEG has also installed a new transformer as part of the Fraser substation improvements. The transformer has been added to the facility’s existing 345 kV infrastructure and is intended to provide additional capacity as electricity requirements in the region develop.

The additional transformer capacity represents an important element of the modernization program because electricity networks must continually adapt to changes in consumption. Growth in residential demand, commercial activity and other electricity-intensive applications can place additional requirements on existing infrastructure. Expanding substation capacity can help utilities manage these requirements while maintaining reliable service.

The Fraser work represents the first phase of NYSEG’s southern Oneonta area improvement project. Rather than focusing on a single facility, the broader program combines substation modernization with improvements to transmission infrastructure in the surrounding area.

The next stages of the project are expected to include construction of new transmission lines and additional upgrades at the Delhi substation. Together, these improvements are intended to create a stronger and more capable electricity network across the area.

The full southern Oneonta improvement project is expected to be completed in 2027. Once all phases are finished, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to provide additional support for electricity supply and transmission across the region.
