Essential Utilities Expands Environmental Impact Through Record-Breaking 2026 Earth Day Campaign
Essential Utilities Inc. (NYSE: WTRG) has successfully wrapped up its fifth annual Essential Earth Day campaign, marking another milestone in the company’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community engagement. The month-long initiative, held throughout April 2026, brought together employees, nonprofit organizations, and local communities across the company’s nine-state service footprint to support environmental conservation efforts and promote sustainability education.
The 30-day campaign delivered record-setting results this year, further strengthening Essential Utilities’ role as a corporate leader focused on protecting natural resources and investing in healthier, more resilient communities. Through financial contributions, volunteer efforts, and educational outreach, the initiative demonstrated how coordinated local action can create meaningful environmental impact on a broader scale.
As part of the 2026 campaign, Essential Utilities donated nearly $1.3 million in grants through the Essential Foundation. The funding supported dozens of organizations focused on environmental protection, watershed restoration, conservation programs, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education initiatives. These grants are designed to help nonprofit partners expand community programs, improve environmental awareness, and implement projects that preserve ecosystems and natural resources for future generations.
The campaign also saw strong employee participation throughout the company. More than 400 employees volunteered approximately 1,450 hours during nearly 40 organized volunteer events. Workers from across Essential Utilities’ operations dedicated time and effort to environmental cleanup projects, habitat restoration, invasive species removal, recycling programs, and community support initiatives.
In addition to hands-on volunteer work, employees participated in educational programs focused on sustainability, environmental health, and conservation practices. These internal initiatives are aimed at increasing awareness of environmental challenges while encouraging employees to integrate sustainability principles into both their professional and personal lives.
Christopher Franklin, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Essential Utilities, highlighted the importance of environmental responsibility and community involvement as central components of the company’s mission.
“As stewards of our natural resources, we understand our tremendous responsibility to protect the environment for future generations,” Franklin said. “This commitment is especially evident during our month-long Essential Earth Day campaign. Each year, I’m incredibly proud of our Essential Foundation’s environmental work, as well as my Essential colleagues who donate their time to make the communities we serve cleaner and greener.”
Throughout the campaign, employees took part in a wide range of environmental projects that produced measurable results in local communities. Volunteer teams collected nearly 300 bags of litter and debris from rivers, trails, parks, and roadways, helping improve public spaces while protecting waterways and wildlife habitats from pollution.
Another major focus of the initiative involved habitat restoration and biodiversity support. Volunteers removed invasive plant species and planted close to 3,500 native trees and wildflowers across multiple locations. These efforts help restore ecosystems, improve air quality, support pollinators, and create healthier green spaces for local residents.
Employees also contributed to a specialized conservation project aimed at protecting the Ohio River Basin ecosystem. Volunteers removed harmful vegetation from a berm that serves as a protective barrier against the spread of invasive carp species, which pose a significant threat to native aquatic life and regional biodiversity.
Community support activities extended beyond environmental restoration projects. Essential employees hosted a collection drive and sorting event designed to divert clothing from landfills while providing essential items to families in need. The initiative combined environmental sustainability with social responsibility by encouraging reuse and reducing textile waste.
Electronic waste management was another important component of the campaign. Through an organized e-waste recycling event, volunteers helped collect and recycle approximately 300 pounds of electronic materials. Proper recycling of electronics helps prevent hazardous materials from entering landfills while recovering valuable resources for reuse.
The company emphasized that these volunteer efforts play a critical role in supporting local environmental organizations and expanding the impact of community-based sustainability programs. By combining financial support with employee engagement, Essential Utilities aims to build long-term partnerships that strengthen environmental resilience across the regions it serves.
One of the nonprofit partners benefiting from the initiative is the Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds Association, an organization dedicated to protecting waterways and improving watershed health in southeastern Pennsylvania. The association works on projects involving stream restoration, water quality protection, and environmental education, helping preserve drinking water resources for local communities and Aqua customers.
Carly Lare, Executive Director of the Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds Association, praised Essential Utilities for its ongoing partnership and commitment to environmental improvement.
“We cannot express enough how much we appreciate Essential’s constant engagement and support,” Lare said. “The Essential Foundation’s financial support allows us to create meaningful solutions in our communities, and Essential’s volunteers have shared their expertise to make real change possible.”
Another key partner highlighted during the campaign was the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, an organization focused on restoring and enhancing Pittsburgh’s public parks and green spaces. The conservancy works to maintain urban green infrastructure that supports recreation, public health, climate resilience, and community well-being.
As the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy celebrates its 30th anniversary, support from the Essential Foundation and Peoples Natural Gas will help fund park improvement projects, expand environmental education programs, and strengthen climate resiliency initiatives throughout Pittsburgh’s park system.
Catherine Qureshi, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, noted the importance of continued corporate partnerships in preserving community green spaces.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Peoples Natural Gas and the Essential Foundation for their continued partnership and belief in our parks,” Qureshi said. “Every day, we see how these spaces bring people together—families, neighbors, and visitors—finding connection, joy, and lasting moments outdoors. Support like this helps ensure Pittsburgh’s parks remain welcoming, vibrant places that serve our communities now and well into the future.”
The Essential Earth Day campaign reflects the company’s broader environmental strategy, which focuses on sustainability, community investment, and responsible utility operations. Since launching the initiative in 2022, Essential Utilities has contributed more than $4.2 million toward environmental causes and community programs.
Over that same period, more than 2,200 employees have participated in nearly 200 volunteer events, contributing over 7,900 volunteer hours to projects involving reforestation, litter removal, habitat restoration, environmental education, and conservation efforts.
The company continues to position environmental stewardship as a core part of its long-term operational and corporate responsibility goals. Essential Utilities provides water, wastewater, and natural gas services to millions of customers while emphasizing sustainability, infrastructure investment, and environmental protection across its operations.
The “Think Globally, Act Locally” philosophy remains central to the Essential Earth Day initiative. By focusing on practical, community-based environmental actions, the company aims to create lasting benefits that extend beyond Earth Day and support healthier ecosystems year-round.
As climate challenges and environmental concerns continue to grow worldwide, Essential Utilities says it remains committed to delivering reliable utility services while advancing conservation efforts, supporting local organizations, and encouraging employee-driven environmental engagement. Through initiatives like Essential Earth Day, the company seeks to reinforce the importance of collective action in building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for generations to come.
