Zelestra Signs Deal with SJVN for 500 MW of Renewable Energy Projects in India

Zelestra, a leading global renewable energy company focused on multi-technology solutions, has secured a significant Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) contract with Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), a prominent Indian public sector company. This contract will enable Zelestra to develop a groundbreaking 500 MW hybrid energy megaproject in India, combining solar, wind, and energy storage technologies. The project is expected to play a key role in transforming India’s renewable energy landscape.

Zelestra’s unique approach to this contract centers on delivering a custom-built solution that meets SJVN’s requirements for 24/7 clean energy supply. This will include energy generation during the crucial morning and evening peak hours, when the demand from the grid is at its highest, ensuring a reliable and continuous flow of green electricity to the grid.

The project will be located in Solapur, Maharashtra, with the energy expected to come online by 2027. The 500 MW hybrid project will consist of 250 MWdc of solar power, 180 MW of wind power, and a 90 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), creating a versatile energy solution. As a vertically integrated energy company, Zelestra will handle the full lifecycle of the project, from development and construction to ownership and operation.

The hybrid energy system is designed to generate over 815 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power over 225,000 Indian households. Moreover, it will help reduce around 0.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, contributing significantly to India’s renewable energy goals and environmental sustainability.

Zelestra’s expanding presence in India now includes a clean energy project pipeline of more than 5.4 GW spread across seven states, further solidifying the company’s growing role in India’s renewable energy sector.

Sajay K.V., Chief Executive Officer of Zelestra India, expressed pride in securing this major contract with SJVN, noting, “This is a transformational project that will combine solar, wind, and battery storage to deliver clean energy throughout the day, including during critical peak hours when homes and businesses need reliable electricity the most.

This is our first and largest multi-technology project win achieved in a single bid. Leveraging our robust technical expertise, we have strategically transitioned from pure-play renewable projects to more complex and reliable green power solutions. These solutions can address the growing decarbonization demands of industrial units and data centers nationwide.”

This agreement further highlights Zelestra’s commitment to innovation in the renewable energy sector. Recently recognized as one of the top 10 global sellers of clean energy to corporate customers by BNEF, and number two in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, Zelestra has consistently demonstrated its ability to develop customized solutions for its clients. The company’s strong track record positions it well to meet the rapidly growing energy demands of India, a country that is increasingly vital in the global shift toward sustainable energy.

Zelestra’s success in India is part of its broader global strategy. The company operates a portfolio of 28 GW of carbon-free projects across 13 countries. As a vertically integrated company, Zelestra specializes in the development, commercialization, construction, and operation of large-scale renewable energy projects. Backed by EQT, one of the world’s largest investment funds with over €269 billion in assets under management, Zelestra is well-equipped to drive the global transition to renewable energy.

The company’s strategy focuses on combining technical expertise and innovative solutions to create energy systems that can provide consistent, clean, and affordable power. As energy demands grow worldwide and the need for decarbonization intensifies, Zelestra’s ability to deliver hybrid solutions that combine solar, wind, and storage technologies is increasingly valuable. The Solapur project is a prime example of Zelestra’s ability to meet the needs of today’s energy landscape, combining reliability, sustainability, and scalability to serve the rapidly growing demand for renewable power.

In conclusion, Zelestra’s partnership with SJVN marks a significant step in the development of India’s renewable energy infrastructure. By leveraging its expertise in multi-technology solutions, Zelestra is not only helping to meet India’s energy needs but is also contributing to the country’s broader environmental goals. With its strong pipeline of projects and commitment to innovation, Zelestra is poised to continue playing a key role in India’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
