Trinasolar US Initiates Legal Action to Safeguard TOPCon Technology Patents

Trinasolar, a leading provider of smart solar products and solutions, has announced that it has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Delaware and a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to safeguard its TOPCon technology patents from infringement by Canadian Solar, Inc. and its affiliates.

Trinasolar’s lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Delaware targets Canadian Solar products sold in the U.S. that allegedly infringe upon Trinasolar’s intellectual property (IP). This legal action emphasizes Trinasolar’s commitment to defending its TOPCon technology and holding accountable any parties that violate its patented innovations.

In addition to the lawsuit, Trinasolar has filed a complaint with the ITC seeking a limited exclusion order and a cease-and-desist order against Canadian Solar, Inc. and its related entities. The limited exclusion order aims to block the importation of certain solar cells, modules, panels, components, and other infringing products into the United States. Meanwhile, the cease-and-desist order is intended to prevent the sale of any inventoried infringing products within the U.S.

“Trinasolar takes patent infringement very seriously, and we are committed to taking all necessary actions to protect our intellectual property,” stated Steven Zhu, president of Trinasolar US. “Having invested heavily in our TOPCon technology, it is vital that we safeguard our patents. We are confident in our ability to prevail in this matter, reinforcing our determination to uphold our IP rights.”

Trinasolar holds over 2,000 patents, including many core patents for its N-type TOPCon technology used in solar module production. These patent rights provide legal protection against unauthorized replication, use, or sale, and entities violating these rights may face legal repercussions and monetary damages. The actions against Canadian Solar, Inc. and related entities are the latest in a series of patent infringement lawsuits initiated by Trinasolar.
