During a high-profile visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Saudi Minister of Energy, a significant step was taken in advancing renewable energy initiatives in the region. TotalEnergies, in partnership with Saudi developer Aljomaih Energy and Water Company (AEW), signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) for the 300 MW Rabigh 2 solar power project.
This initiative is part of Round 5 of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), a program supervised by the Ministry of Energy. The NREP aims to achieve a balanced energy mix for electricity generation, with approximately 50% of power coming from gas and renewable sources by 2030. This strategy is integral to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which seeks to reduce reliance on liquid fuels in electricity production and promote sustainable development. The Rabigh 2 solar plant, under this agreement, will be developed, constructed, owned, and operated by the TotalEnergies-Aljomaih consortium, with grid connection anticipated by 2026.
Advancing Saudi Arabia’s Renewable Energy Goals
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the project’s alignment with the company’s vision and Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy targets. “Together with our partner Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, we are thrilled to contribute to Saudi Arabia’s target of increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix. Our extensive participation in projects like Satorp and Amiral underscores our strong partnership with the Kingdom. The Rabigh 2 project is a testament to our multi-energy strategy, which focuses on providing more energy with fewer emissions. This initiative further strengthens our commitment to electricity and renewable energy growth, supporting Saudi Arabia’s energy transition.”
Commitment to Vision 2030 and Sustainability
Ibrahim Al Jomaih, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, expressed pride in the collaboration with TotalEnergies. “We are proud to lead the development of the 300 MW Rabigh 2 solar project with TotalEnergies, showcasing our shared dedication to Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative and Vision 2030. By combining our local expertise with TotalEnergies’ global reach, we aim to advance the energy transition and contribute to the Kingdom’s sustainability objectives. We extend our gratitude to SPPC for their trust and support, enabling us to realize this ambitious project.”
TotalEnergies’ Global Energy Transition Strategy
As part of its ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a world-class, cost-competitive portfolio of renewable energy assets, including solar and wind power, as well as flexible technologies like combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and energy storage. By the end of 2023, the company’s gross renewable electricity generation capacity reached 22 GW, and it aims to grow this capacity to 35 GW by 2025. Looking ahead, TotalEnergies plans to produce over 100 TWh of net electricity annually by 2030.
TotalEnergies is a globally integrated energy company that produces and markets oil, biofuels, natural gas, green gases, renewable energy, and electricity. With over 100,000 employees in approximately 120 countries, the company places sustainability at the core of its operations, striving to deliver energy that is reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible.
A Milestone in Renewable Energy Development
The Rabigh 2 solar project marks a critical milestone in Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy journey and underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing global energy challenges. By leveraging advanced technology and local expertise, the TotalEnergies-Aljomaih partnership sets a benchmark for sustainable energy projects in the region and beyond.
