Tender Won: ADS-TEC Energy to Supply Ultra-Fast Battery Chargers to Q8

ADS-TEC Energy Secures Tender to Supply Battery-Based Ultra-Fast Chargers to Q8

ADS-TEC Energy, a global leader in battery-based energy storage and ultra-fast charging solutions, has officially been selected by Q8, a major mobility service provider, to supply its cutting-edge battery-integrated ultra-fast chargers. This collaboration represents a substantial advancement in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure expansion across Belgium and the Netherlands. The partnership is a direct result of a recently awarded tender, under which ADS-TEC Energy will deliver more than a dozen ChargePost and ChargeBox systems to Q8 and its Tango service stations. These innovative charging systems will enable ultra-fast charging, even in locations with constrained grid capacity due to network congestion.

Addressing Grid Limitations with Battery-Buffered Charging

One of the key challenges in deploying ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure is the limited capacity of existing power grids. In many locations across Belgium and the Netherlands, the electrical grid is not capable of directly supporting high-powered charging stations. This limitation often requires costly and time-consuming grid upgrades to enable the deployment of fast-charging solutions. However, ADS-TEC Energy’s battery-buffered technology circumvents this challenge by enabling ultra-fast charging with power outputs of up to 320 kW, even in areas where grid capacity is insufficient.

The ChargePost and ChargeBox systems from ADS-TEC Energy utilize integrated battery storage, allowing them to store energy during periods of low demand and then release it rapidly when an electric vehicle needs to charge. This capability ensures that high-speed charging is always available, regardless of the local grid’s capacity. Additionally, these solutions provide auxiliary revenue opportunities, as the ChargePost system can generate income even when no vehicle is actively charging. It supports energy trading and features large advertising screens, offering an additional revenue stream for operators.

Strategic Collaboration to Drive EV Adoption

Thomas Speidel, CEO and founder of ADS-TEC Energy, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership:
“We are proud that Q8 has chosen us as a partner to drive forward the expansion of electric mobility in Belgium and the Netherlands. The limited grid capacity is one of the biggest challenges in building out a widespread fast charging network. This partnership demonstrates that innovative battery storage technology is a crucial building block for the mobility of the future.”

Q8 has been a frontrunner in adopting sustainable mobility solutions, aiming to meet the evolving needs of EV drivers across Belgium and the Netherlands. Geert De Mil, Charging Technology, Systems and Insights Manager at Q8, emphasized the importance of this collaboration:
“Q8 is committed to meeting the evolving needs of all EV drivers for (fast) charging across Belgium and the Netherlands, even in locations where, due to network congestion, limited grid capacity is available. That’s why we are very excited to collaborate with ADS-TEC Energy to make that possible.”

This partnership underscores Q8’s commitment to sustainability and its dedication to ensuring that EV drivers have access to reliable and efficient charging infrastructure. By integrating ADS-TEC Energy’s battery-buffered solutions, Q8 will be able to deploy ultra-fast chargers in strategic locations without waiting for costly and time-consuming grid upgrades.

Innovative Technology to Overcome Infrastructure Challenges

The deployment of ADS-TEC Energy’s charging solutions is expected to significantly enhance the charging experience for EV drivers in Belgium and the Netherlands. The ChargePost system not only provides ultra-fast charging but also supports grid stability by reducing peak demand on the electricity network. This technology is particularly beneficial in urban environments where grid expansion may not be feasible due to space constraints or regulatory hurdles.

The ChargePost system features an all-in-one design with integrated battery storage and ultra-fast charging capabilities. It can provide power to vehicles at up to 320 kW while maintaining a compact footprint. This makes it ideal for urban and suburban settings, where space is often limited. Furthermore, the system’s ability to participate in energy trading and display advertisements on its optional 75-inch screens creates additional value for operators.

Rising Demand for Fast-Charging Infrastructure

The demand for fast-charging solutions in Belgium and the Netherlands is increasing rapidly, driven by the growing adoption of electric vehicles. In 2024, both countries experienced a surge in EV registrations. In the Netherlands, 34.7% of newly registered vehicles were electric, totaling approximately 132,166 units. Belgium recorded a similar trend, with 127,908 new EV registrations during the same period. As a result, there are currently around 280,000 electric vehicles on Belgian roads and approximately 557,000 in the Netherlands.

This rapid expansion of e-mobility is placing significant pressure on existing charging infrastructure. In regions with limited grid capacity, traditional charging stations may struggle to keep up with demand. ADS-TEC Energy’s battery-buffered solutions provide a scalable and cost-effective approach to addressing this challenge. By integrating battery storage, these systems can absorb peak loads and ensure a stable energy supply, thereby promoting the broader adoption of electric vehicles.

Future Prospects and Industry Impact

The partnership between ADS-TEC Energy and Q8 is a testament to the transformative role of battery storage technology in the EV charging industry. By deploying battery-buffered ultra-fast chargers, Q8 is not only enhancing its service offerings but also contributing to the broader transition toward sustainable transportation.

As electric vehicle adoption continues to accelerate, the demand for reliable and efficient charging solutions will only grow. Governments and private sector stakeholders alike are investing heavily in infrastructure to support this transition. The European Union has set ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions and increasing the share of electric vehicles on the road. Initiatives such as the European Green Deal and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) underscore the need for widespread, high-performance charging networks.

ADS-TEC Energy’s technology aligns with these objectives by providing solutions that mitigate grid limitations while ensuring that EV drivers have access to fast and convenient charging options. The ability to deploy high-powered chargers without extensive grid upgrades makes this approach particularly attractive for service station operators, fleet managers, and municipalities looking to expand their EV infrastructure efficiently.
