Svante Technologies Inc., a Canadian clean technology company specializing in carbon capture and removal solutions, has announced a significant milestone in the advancement of durable carbon dioxide removal. The company, together with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC), revealed that North Star Carbon Solutions LP has signed a long-term offtake agreement with the technology company Microsoft to supply 626,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits over a 15-year period. The credits will be generated through the North Star bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project located in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The agreement represents one of the largest commitments for durable carbon removal credits tied to a Canadian BECCS initiative and highlights the increasing demand from major corporations for verified carbon removal solutions that can help meet ambitious climate targets. The North Star project is being developed through a partnership between the Meadow Lake Tribal Council and Svante, and the facility will be located at the MLTC Bioenergy Centre in the community of Meadow Lake.

Development of the North Star BECCS Project

The North Star project centers on the deployment of a carbon capture plant that will be integrated with the existing MLTC Bioenergy Centre. This facility already produces renewable electricity by using sustainable waste biomass sourced from the nearby sawmill owned by the Meadow Lake Tribal Council and other forest product operations in the surrounding region.

By integrating carbon capture technology with bioenergy production, the project will create a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage system. BECCS is widely recognized as one of the most promising approaches for generating negative emissions because it removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while simultaneously producing renewable energy.

Under the project plan, the new carbon capture facility will be owned and operated by North Star Carbon Solutions LP. This entity represents a joint venture between the Meadow Lake Tribal Council and Carbon Alpha Corp., a subsidiary recently acquired by Svante. Through this collaboration, the partners aim to establish a fully integrated system capable of capturing, transporting, and permanently storing carbon dioxide emissions generated during the biomass energy process.

At full capacity, the carbon capture plant is expected to generate up to 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal credits annually. These credits will be delivered to Microsoft over a 15-year period as part of the offtake agreement, helping the technology company advance its climate commitments and carbon reduction goals.

A Complete Carbon Removal Value Chain

One of the key strengths of the North Star project is its comprehensive approach to carbon removal. The captured carbon dioxide will not only be separated from the biomass power generation process but will also be transported and permanently stored underground.

According to project plans, the captured CO₂ will be safely transported to a geologic storage site owned and operated by North Star Carbon Solutions. Svante will initially provide the necessary funding required to advance the project through development phases until the partners reach a final investment decision to begin construction. If development progresses as expected, the project’s commercial operations are scheduled to begin in early 2029. Once operational, the facility will start producing carbon removal credits that will be delivered to Microsoft under the long-term offtake contract.

Once the facility becomes operational, up to 10 permanent jobs will be required to manage and maintain the carbon capture plant and related infrastructure.
