ScottishPower has finalized a £1 billion turbine supply deal with Siemens Gamesa for its £4 billion East Anglia TWO offshore wind project. The agreement includes the provision of 64 SG 14-236 DD* offshore wind turbines, each featuring a rotor diameter of 236 meters—nearly the height of London’s Shard observation deck. Located about 33 kilometers off Suffolk’s coast, the East Anglia TWO wind farm will generate up to 960MW of renewable power, enough to supply green electricity to nearly one million homes.
The 115-meter turbine blades will be produced at Siemens Gamesa’s Hull facility, which has expanded its workforce by 600 in the past year, now employing around 1,300 people. This agreement follows ScottishPower’s recent announcement to double its UK investment from £12 billion to £24 billion between 2024 and 2028.
UK Leadership Praises the Investment
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that Britain’s commitment to clean energy strengthens national security, builds prosperity, and supports industrial growth in cities and towns. Starmer remarked on the UK’s opportunity to lead global green initiatives, benefiting from partnerships with companies like ScottishPower and Siemens Energy to lower energy bills and expand green jobs.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband also welcomed the investment, highlighting the essential role of offshore wind in the UK’s clean power mission. He noted the investment’s potential to fortify energy security, reduce costs, and accelerate the country’s shift towards renewable energy.
Industry Leaders Comment on the Project
Keith Anderson, CEO of ScottishPower, underscored the East Anglia projects’ contribution to UK jobs and supply chain contracts, stressing the importance of expediting clean energy projects. Anderson stated that quick progress on projects like East Anglia TWO would bolster confidence in the UK supply chain and encourage investments in facilities such as Siemens Gamesa’s blade factory in Hull.
Darren Davidson, UK and Ireland Vice President for Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa, highlighted the UK’s position as a global leader in phasing out coal power and expanding offshore wind. Davidson noted that Siemens Gamesa’s Hull facility is not only producing blades to support the UK’s net-zero goals but also catalyzing economic growth and green jobs in the region.
East Anglia Wind Projects Driving the UK’s Clean Energy Goals
East Anglia is central to ScottishPower’s offshore wind ambitions, with East Anglia ONE operational, East Anglia THREE under construction, and preparations underway for East Anglia TWO. Together, these projects, all featuring Siemens Gamesa turbines, will produce enough green electricity to power over three million homes, supporting the UK’s clean power objectives and adding resilience to its renewable energy infrastructure.
ScottishPower’s East Anglia TWO project marks a critical advancement in the UK’s clean energy transition, highlighting the synergy between government support, industry investment, and the expansion of green energy solutions to meet growing demand.
