In a landmark step toward redefining sustainable infrastructure in the digital era, XL Batteries, a pioneering energy storage company, and Prometheus Hyperscale, a leading developer of sustainable hyperscale data centers, have entered into a multi-year partnership aimed at deploying long-duration, on-site energy storage systems at Prometheus data center campuses across the United States.

This agreement marks a significant advancement in the alignment of clean energy technology with the rapidly expanding demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud-based digital operations. The deployment of XL Batteries’ revolutionary Organic Flow Battery™ will enable Prometheus to bolster energy resilience, enhance operational continuity, and significantly reduce its environmental footprint.

Rising Demand and Energy Pressures on the Data Center Sector

Global data center electricity consumption is skyrocketing. With the widespread adoption of AI, machine learning, and high-density computing applications, the energy demands from data centers are expected to grow exponentially. According to industry projections, data center power consumption could surge by up to 165% by 2030, posing significant challenges to the electric grid and raising sustainability concerns among technology companies, governments, and climate advocacy groups alike.

As digital infrastructure becomes more critical to modern economies, the resilience of data centers is being tested. Simultaneously, the energy industry is undergoing its own transformation—shifting from centralized fossil-fuel generation toward decentralized, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. These renewables, while carbon-free, are intermittent and add volatility to power supply reliability.

XL Batteries’ Organic Flow Battery: A Game-Changing Technology

The cornerstone of the partnership is the deployment of XL Batteries’ Organic Flow Battery™, a novel, grid-scale energy storage system that promises to deliver safe, long-duration power without the environmental and safety risks associated with conventional lithium-ion technology.

Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which are flammable, resource-intensive, and subject to degradation, XL Batteries’ system is engineered from non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive patented organic molecules. These molecules are suspended in aqueous electrolyte solutions and circulated through a system of electrochemical cells to store and release electricity.

The flow battery architecture allows the energy capacity (tank size) to be scaled independently from the power capacity (cell stack size), enabling modular designs tailored to specific site needs—from short-interval power quality improvements to multi-hour load shifting and backup.

Furthermore, XL’s battery chemistry is derived from abundant and globally distributed feedstocks, which mitigates geopolitical risks and reduces exposure to mineral supply chain volatility—issues that increasingly plague lithium-ion battery markets reliant on cobalt, nickel, and rare earth metals.

Phase 1: Pilot System Deployment (2027)
In the initial phase of the collaboration, XL Batteries will design, deliver, and commission a 333 kilowatt (kW) standalone Organic Flow Battery system at one of Prometheus’ flagship U.S. data center campuses. This system will serve as a testbed for validating system integration, evaluating operational performance, and collecting real-time data on compute load management and battery cycling under demanding AI workloads.

Phase 2: Commercial-Scale Rollout (2028–2029)
Following successful validation of the pilot system, Prometheus has committed to purchasing a 12.5 megawatt (MW) / 125 megawatt-hour (MWh) commercial-scale Organic Flow Battery system in 2028. A second identical system will follow in 2029. These large-scale deployments are designed to support the full-scale energy needs of Prometheus’ next-generation data halls, further advancing their goal of 24/7 clean energy operation.

Future Vision: Broad Implementation Across Data Center Footprint
Both XL Batteries and Prometheus have expressed their intent to continue the partnership well beyond the initial deployments. The companies share a long-term strategic vision in which XL’s technology becomes a core component of Prometheus’ energy infrastructure across multiple U.S. regions and potentially in international markets.
