NRG Energy Announces Leadership Transition as Rasesh Patel Retires from President, Consumer Role

NRG Energy Inc., a leading integrated power company and innovator in energy and home services, announced today a significant leadership change as Rasesh Patel, President of NRG’s Consumer segment, will be retiring from his role effective May 19, 2025. Mr. Patel, a seasoned executive with deep experience in technology, customer experience, and integrated energy systems, has been a key architect of the company’s evolving consumer strategy. Following his departure, he will continue to serve in an advisory capacity to ensure a seamless and well-structured transition. The company has confirmed that it expects to name his successor during the second quarter of 2025.

The announcement marks a pivotal moment in NRG Energy’s continued journey to deliver innovative, consumer-centric energy and smart home solutions. Under Mr. Patel’s tenure, the company has taken bold steps to unify its offerings across smart home technologies and traditional energy services, positioning itself as a comprehensive platform serving millions of residential customers.

“Rasesh has been a transformational leader at NRG,” said Larry Coben, Chair, President, and Chief Executive Officer of NRG. “His strategic insights and operational excellence have been instrumental in steering our consumer business through one of its most dynamic and innovative phases. From integrating Vivint Smart Home into our ecosystem to delivering the industry’s first residential virtual power plant offering, Rasesh’s contributions have fundamentally reshaped how we serve and empower our customers.”

Mr. Coben continued, “While we are saddened by his decision to retire, we fully support his choice and remain deeply grateful for his unwavering dedication. On behalf of the Board of Directors, the executive team, and our entire organization, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Rasesh for his vision, leadership, and the culture of innovation and accountability he has helped to instill. We wish him the very best as he embarks on his next chapter.”

A Legacy of Consumer Innovation

Rasesh Patel joined NRG Energy in March 2023, following the company’s strategic acquisition of Vivint Smart Home, a move that significantly expanded NRG’s footprint in the fast-growing smart home and residential automation sector. He initially served as President of Smart Home, bringing with him an extensive background in customer engagement, connected technologies, and service-based business models.

In March 2024, Mr. Patel took on an expanded role as President of NRG Consumer, assuming full leadership over all residential-facing business lines, including the integration of NRG’s Home Energy and Smart Home platforms. This unification was a key component of NRG’s broader strategy to simplify and personalize the customer experience by delivering cohesive energy and home management solutions under a single umbrella.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Patel led NRG’s efforts to build a fully integrated consumer platform designed to meet the evolving needs of modern households. This included not only enhancing core energy delivery services but also expanding the company’s offerings around home automation, security, energy efficiency, and renewable energy management. The culmination of these efforts was the successful launch of a residential virtual power plant (VPP) offering—a landmark achievement that combined distributed energy resources, AI-driven optimization, and consumer-friendly interfaces to deliver cleaner and more resilient energy solutions at scale.

Reflections from Mr. Patel

In a personal statement reflecting on his tenure at NRG, Mr. Patel expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead during a time of tremendous innovation and transformation.

“Leading the integration of Smart Home and Home Energy at NRG has truly been one of the most rewarding chapters of my career,” said Mr. Patel. “We started with a bold vision: to create a smarter, cleaner, and safer home for millions of families across the country. And together—with a passionate, world-class team—we made that vision a reality. The work we’ve done to redefine what consumers can expect from their energy provider has laid the groundwork for a more sustainable and empowering future.”

He added, “Among the accomplishments I’m most proud of is our work to develop the industry’s first residential virtual power plant solution. It’s a testament to the power of integrating smart home technologies with intelligent energy services—something that only NRG could do at this scale, thanks to our team’s expertise and our trusted relationships with customers. I leave with the utmost confidence in the future of the company and in the leadership team that will carry this mission forward.”

A Strong Foundation for the Future

NRG’s announcement of this leadership change comes at a time when the company is accelerating its focus on energy innovation, digital engagement, and personalized consumer experiences. With Rasesh Patel’s leadership, NRG built a strong foundation for long-term success in these areas—focusing on scalable, tech-enabled platforms and expanding its capabilities to meet changing consumer expectations.

“Rasesh has helped us not only think bigger but act smarter,” said Heather Anderson, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy. “He brought an incredible ability to translate strategic goals into customer-facing innovations that truly work. His impact will be felt for years to come across every part of our consumer business.”

During his tenure, NRG also sharpened its focus on leveraging data and artificial intelligence to optimize home energy consumption, driving both cost savings for customers and operational efficiencies for the company. Mr. Patel championed the idea that energy companies must meet consumers where they are—delivering value through personalization, automation, and ease-of-use.

As the company looks to name his successor, executives have made clear that the next chapter will continue to build on Mr. Patel’s legacy of innovation and integration.

“We are committed to continuing the momentum we’ve built in our Consumer segment,” Mr. Coben said. “We are actively engaged in a rigorous search for a leader who shares our vision and can continue to deliver for customers, employees, and shareholders alike.”

A Personal Journey and Future Aspirations

With more than two decades of leadership experience in technology and customer-driven industries, Mr. Patel has long been recognized for his commitment to excellence and innovation. Prior to joining NRG, he held senior roles at AT&T and other technology-focused organizations, consistently leading initiatives that brought transformative change to large-scale consumer operations.

As he steps away from his executive duties, Mr. Patel says he plans to focus on personal pursuits, advisory opportunities, and community involvement.

“I’m excited to turn my focus toward philanthropic work, advisory roles where I can share my experience, and most importantly, spending more time with my wife, Suchi, and our family,” he said. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity I had at NRG, and I leave with a sense of pride and optimism about where the company is headed.”

Importantly, Mr. Patel also remains an investor and long-term shareholder in the company—a sign of his continued belief in NRG’s vision and value proposition.

“As a shareholder, I’ll be cheering from the sidelines. The energy landscape is evolving fast, and I have no doubt that NRG will remain at the forefront of that transformation,” he concluded.
