New Fortress Energy Expands Gas Supply in Puerto Rico

New Fortress Energy Inc. has announced a significant milestone in its ongoing partnership with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA). The company has secured a one-year extension of its 80 TBtu islandwide gas supply contract with PREPA, reinforcing its commitment to providing stable and affordable energy to Puerto Rico. This extension not only ensures continued gas supply but also paves the way for more sustainable and cost-effective power generation solutions across the island.

In addition to the contract extension, NFE has agreed to modify its 10-year Operation and Maintenance Agreement with PREPA. This modification involves eliminating future incentive payments in exchange for a one-time payment of $110 million. This change is designed to streamline the incentive structure and better align the objectives of NFE and Puerto Rico. The restructuring of this agreement was achieved through close collaboration between NFE and key Puerto Rican stakeholders, including Governor Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB), the Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority (P3A), and PREPA. The primary goal of these modifications is to optimize energy delivery, ensuring that Puerto Ricans receive reliable, cleaner power at the lowest possible cost.

A Broader Vision for Puerto Rico’s Energy Future

The islandwide gas supply contract covers a substantial capacity that can cater not only to NFE’s existing downstream gas demand but also to other legacy power plants that currently rely on diesel. These diesel-powered plants can be converted to run on natural gas, which presents a tremendous opportunity for both NFE and Puerto Rico. The benefits of such conversions are multifaceted. Firstly, switching from diesel to natural gas supply can generate significant cost savings for Puerto Rico. Secondly, it supports the island’s efforts to reduce emissions and transition towards a more sustainable energy infrastructure. Lastly, these efforts lay the groundwork for long-term, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible energy solutions that can enhance Puerto Rico’s overall energy security.

NFE’s efforts align with Puerto Rico’s broader goals of modernizing its energy infrastructure. Historically, Puerto Rico has faced severe energy challenges, including aging power plants, frequent blackouts, and a high dependence on expensive imported fuels. By extending the gas supply contract and facilitating power plant conversions, NFE is actively contributing to a transformation that prioritizes cleaner and more reliable energy sources.

NFE’s Commitment to Puerto Rico’s Energy Security

Since 2017, NFE has played a pivotal role in supporting Puerto Rico’s energy needs, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Maria. The devastating hurricane left much of the island without power for months, exposing vulnerabilities in its energy grid and highlighting the urgent need for investment in infrastructure resilience. NFE was among the first responders to this crisis, deploying resources and investing hundreds of millions of dollars into projects aimed at restoring and improving Puerto Rico’s power supply.

To date, NFE’s contributions have led to over $500 million in fuel cost savings for Puerto Rico, a testament to the economic benefits of natural gas as an alternative energy source. The recently extended gas supply contract is expected to unlock additional opportunities for further savings, potentially amounting to billions of dollars in the future. These savings could be redirected toward further investments in infrastructure, renewable energy integration, and economic development, ultimately benefiting Puerto Rico’s residents and businesses.

Environmental and Economic Benefits of Natural Gas Adoption

The shift from diesel to natural gas as a primary fuel source carries significant environmental advantages. Diesel combustion produces higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter, all of which contribute to air pollution and climate change. By transitioning to natural gas, Puerto Rico can substantially reduce its carbon footprint, improve air quality, and align with global efforts to combat climate change.

Moreover, natural gas is not only cleaner but also more cost-efficient than diesel. This affordability translates into lower electricity costs for Puerto Rican households and businesses, making energy more accessible and affordable for the population. Reducing energy costs is particularly crucial for economic growth, as lower electricity prices can attract new businesses, support industrial expansion, and improve overall competitiveness.

A Strengthened Partnership with Puerto Rico

Wes Edens, Chairman and CEO of New Fortress Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement, emphasizing its significance in reinforcing the company’s partnership with Puerto Rico. “We are pleased to reach this agreement, which strengthens our partnership with Puerto Rico,” said Edens. “Optimizing our existing contract allows us to accelerate the delivery of cleaner, more affordable energy while achieving meaningful cost savings and environmental benefits for the people of Puerto Rico.”

This strengthened partnership reflects a shared vision between NFE and Puerto Rico’s government to enhance the island’s energy resilience. By working together, both parties can drive initiatives that prioritize sustainability, economic stability, and long-term energy security. The collaborative approach taken in restructuring the incentive payments also underscores the commitment to transparency and efficiency in energy management.

The Road Ahead: Potential for Expansion and Renewable Integration

Looking ahead, NFE’s extended contract and continued investments set the stage for further advancements in Puerto Rico’s energy sector. While natural gas provides an immediate solution to the island’s energy challenges, the long-term vision includes integrating more renewable energy sources into the grid. Puerto Rico has abundant renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. A diversified energy portfolio that includes both natural gas and renewables can enhance grid stability, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and make Puerto Rico more self-sufficient in its energy production.

NFE’s existing infrastructure and experience in the energy sector position the company as a key player in facilitating this transition. By leveraging its expertise, NFE can support Puerto Rico in developing hybrid energy solutions that combine natural gas with renewables, ensuring a smooth and sustainable energy transformation.
