Mitsubishi Power Invests $490 Million in Savannah Manufacturing Expansion

Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. has announced plans to expand its Savannah Machinery Works facility in Georgia through a $490 million investment from its parent company, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). The expansion will strengthen U.S. manufacturing capabilities for advanced power generation equipment, increase production capacity, and create more than 220 new jobs. The project comes as electricity demand continues to grow across the Americas, increasing the need for reliable power generation equipment and expanded industrial manufacturing infrastructure.

Savannah Machinery Works serves as a major manufacturing and service center for advanced-class gas turbines, steam turbines, and other power generation equipment supplied to customers throughout the Americas. The planned expansion will add 450,000 square feet to the existing facility, improving manufacturing operations and supporting the company’s ability to meet increasing customer requirements.

The facility’s strategic location provides access to regional transportation networks, including port and rail infrastructure and the intersection of Interstate 95 and Interstate 16. These connections are expected to support the movement of materials and finished equipment while improving supply chain efficiency.

$490 Million Investment to Strengthen Manufacturing

The expansion represents a significant investment in Mitsubishi Power’s U.S. manufacturing operations. The additional space will accommodate increased machining capacity, advanced manufacturing technologies, improved material flow, and production infrastructure designed to support future industrial requirements.

The project will also create employment opportunities across several operational areas, including manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, maintenance, logistics, and support services. More than 220 new jobs are expected to be added at Savannah Machinery Works as the company expands its production capabilities.

The investment is intended to strengthen the facility’s ability to manufacture and deliver critical power generation equipment while improving operational efficiency. By increasing production capacity and introducing additional manufacturing capabilities, Mitsubishi Power aims to support customers responding to changing electricity demand across the Americas.

Brandon Bodie, Vice President of Savannah Machinery Works, said the Savannah facility has been an important center for Mitsubishi Power since 2010. He explained that the expansion reflects the company’s continued commitment to the local community, its employees, and its manufacturing operations.

According to Bodie, the investment will support facility improvements, workforce development, manufacturing capabilities, and a more resilient supply chain. These developments will help the company deliver essential power generation equipment and services while contributing to economic growth in Savannah.

Partnership With Savannah Economic Development Authority

The expansion announcement coincided with the signing of an expansion framework agreement between Mitsubishi Power Americas and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA). The agreement formalizes the company’s continued growth in the region and highlights cooperation between the company and local economic development organizations.

Representatives from Mitsubishi Power Americas and SEDA attended the announcement alongside officials from the Georgia Department of Economic Development, elected representatives, and community leaders.

Trip Tollison, President and CEO of SEDA, described the project as a major development for Chatham County. He noted that the expansion emerged from a highly competitive process and represents one of Mitsubishi Power Americas’ largest investments to date.

Tollison also emphasized the project’s potential to create meaningful employment opportunities for the local community. He acknowledged the contributions of SEDA’s existing-industry team, including Director of Existing Industry Zachary Ott, as well as the organization’s economic development partners.

SEDA said it looks forward to a future groundbreaking ceremony that will mark the beginning of the construction phase.

The agreement and planned investment reinforce the importance of collaboration between manufacturers and regional economic development organizations in attracting industrial investment, supporting employment, and strengthening local manufacturing capabilities.

Savannah Facility’s Manufacturing History

Mitsubishi Power began developing Savannah Machinery Works in September 2009. The facility was established as the company’s first complete gas turbine manufacturing operation outside Japan, marking an important milestone in its international manufacturing strategy.

Construction of the original 430,000-square-foot facility was completed in September 2010. The site subsequently became a central part of Mitsubishi Power’s manufacturing and service operations in the United States.

In October 2012, the facility shipped the first gas turbine manufactured by Mitsubishi Power in the United States. This achievement established Savannah’s role in the company’s domestic production network and expanded its ability to serve customers in the American power generation market.

In June 2023, Savannah Machinery Works reached another milestone when it manufactured and shipped its 50th advanced-class gas turbine. The achievement demonstrated the facility’s established production capabilities and its contribution to supplying equipment for power generation projects.

The planned expansion builds on this manufacturing history by increasing the site’s available space and introducing additional capabilities to support future production requirements.

Part of Mitsubishi Power’s Wider U.S. Investment Strategy

The Savannah expansion forms part of Mitsubishi Power’s broader investment strategy across the Americas. The company is also strengthening its service and corporate infrastructure to support customers and its expanding business operations.

Recent developments include the opening of its expanded Power Generation Services Headquarters in Orlando, Florida. Mitsubishi Power also plans to open a new corporate headquarters in Lake Mary, Florida, in November 2026, with additional expansions planned through 2028.

These investments reflect the company’s approach to strengthening its manufacturing, service, and operational presence in the United States. By investing in production facilities and organizational infrastructure, Mitsubishi Power aims to improve its capacity to serve customers throughout the power generation industry.

Bill Newsom, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, said that meeting growing electricity demand requires continued investment in manufacturing facilities, supply chains, and workforce capabilities.

He explained that the Savannah Machinery Works expansion will strengthen American manufacturing and provide employees with advanced capabilities to support customers. The investment is also intended to help the company respond to electricity growth across the Americas over the coming decades.

Supporting Future Power Generation Requirements

The expansion of Savannah Machinery Works is expected to increase Mitsubishi Power’s manufacturing capacity while supporting employment and economic development in Georgia. The additional facility space, upgraded production capabilities, and expanded workforce will help the company respond to customer requirements for advanced power generation equipment.

With a $490 million investment from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and plans to create more than 220 jobs, the project represents a substantial commitment to U.S. industrial manufacturing. Its combination of production expansion, workforce development, and transportation access is expected to strengthen Savannah’s role in Mitsubishi Power’s regional operations.

As electricity demand grows and power generation infrastructure requires continued development, the expansion will provide additional manufacturing resources to support customers across the Americas. The project also reinforces Mitsubishi Power’s long-term presence in the United States and its strategy of investing in the facilities, people, and supply chains needed to serve the evolving power generation market.
