LG Energy Solution (KRX: 373220) announced that its subsidiary, LG Energy Solution Arizona, has entered a supply agreement with Rivian, the U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer. Under this agreement, LG Energy Solution will supply Rivian with 4695 cylindrical batteries over five years, totaling 67 GWh.
The advanced 4695 cylindrical battery, with a diameter of 46mm and a height of 95mm, is renowned for its long range and high safety, offering over six times the capacity of the smaller 2170 cylindrical battery. This larger battery size enhances energy density, space efficiency, and safety—qualities that are drawing attention across the EV industry.
Initially, LG Energy Solution’s standalone Arizona plant will produce these batteries, delivering them to Rivian’s facility in Normal, Illinois, for use in Rivian’s R2 model for the North American market.
With 20 years of expertise in cylindrical battery technology, LG Energy Solution aims to strengthen its foothold in the U.S. market through this agreement with Rivian. The partnership aligns with LG’s strategy to support the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) by developing competitive battery solutions and expanding into new markets.
Amid growing demand for 46-series cylindrical batteries, LG Energy Solution expects to solidify its leadership in this sector.
“As the EV market evolves, global automakers increasingly favor a variety of battery form factors,” said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “This large-scale order from Rivian for 4695 batteries represents a significant milestone, expanding LG Energy Solution’s presence in the cylindrical battery segment.”
