LG Energy Solution (KRX: 373220) has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), a global leader in semiconductor technology. This collaboration aims to bolster the competitiveness of LG Energy Solution’s battery management total solution (BMTS).
Under the MoU, the companies will embark on a two-year joint initiative. ADI will supply high-performance battery management integrated circuits (BMIC), while both parties will engage in the co-development of algorithms for precise internal temperature measurements of electric vehicle (EV) battery cells. This collaborative effort is expected to pave the way for the advancement of fast-charging technologies.
ADI, renowned for its technological prowess and focus on sustainable energy, offers a diverse product portfolio that includes advanced impedance measurement technologies.
Impedance, defined as the resistance of an electrical component to alternating current and voltage, plays a crucial role in assessing battery health. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technology, utilized by ADI, accurately measures impedance at various frequencies, providing valuable insights into battery conditions such as state, age, and temperature.
Traditional battery management systems rely on external temperature measurement devices, leading to conservative charging temperature settings and slower charging speeds. However, ADI’s EIS solutions enable precise internal temperature estimation without the need for additional devices, thus facilitating faster charging while ensuring safety and longevity of batteries.
While this technology is primarily used for analyzing used batteries and is yet to be commercialized, the joint effort between LG Energy Solution and ADI signifies an innovative step towards real-time impedance measurement for EV battery analysis.
LG Energy Solution intends to leverage its expertise in battery manufacturing and BMS capabilities alongside ADI’s advanced impedance measurement technology to enhance its BMTS and deliver enhanced value to customers.
Dalhoon Lee, Vice President and head of the BMS R&D Center at LG Energy Solution, expressed confidence in the joint effort, emphasizing its potential to strengthen LG Energy Solution’s battery management solution and provide differentiated value to customers.
Roger Keen, General Manager of Battery Management at ADI, highlighted the industry-leading capabilities of ADI’s EIS technology and expressed enthusiasm for further collaboration with LG Energy Solution to advance the clean energy ecosystem and deliver state-of-the-art batteries to the market.
