
INNIO Wins 450 MW Data Center Order
INNIO N.V. has secured an order from a U.S. energy company for 450 megawatts (MW) of power infrastructure to support the development of large-scale data center projects in North America. The order will deploy INNIO’s Jenbacher J624 containerized gas engines as part of prime power solutions designed to provide data centers with reliable electricity amid growing constraints on traditional grid infrastructure.
The order represents the first purchase of this scale by the customer from INNIO and highlights the increasing interest in on-site power generation as data center developers address rising electricity requirements. The firm order was booked during INNIO’s third quarter of 2026, with delivery of the engines expected to take place by 2028.
The name of the U.S. energy company has not been disclosed. INNIO said the decision is consistent with customary confidentiality practices in the data center industry, where details about power infrastructure suppliers and project configurations may remain undisclosed during development.
The agreement comes as demand for electricity from data centers continues to increase, driven in large part by artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing and the expansion of digital services. These applications require significant amounts of power and can place additional pressure on electricity networks in regions where data center development is accelerating.
As developers pursue increasingly large facilities, access to sufficient grid capacity has become an important consideration in project planning. Connecting new data centers to existing electricity networks can involve lengthy infrastructure development, transmission constraints and other limitations. In response, some developers are evaluating on-site and behind-the-meter generation as an alternative or complementary source of power.
INNIO said its Jenbacher technology can support this approach by providing prime power independently of conventional grid availability. Containerization can simplify transportation and installation by allowing power generation equipment to be packaged into standardized units. For large projects, this approach can help developers manage equipment deployment across multiple sites or phases of construction while reducing some of the logistical requirements associated with conventional power plant installations.
Another feature highlighted by INNIO is the engine’s load-following capability. Data centers increasingly include AI and high-performance computing workloads that can create demanding and dynamic electricity requirements. Power infrastructure must therefore be capable of responding to changes in load while maintaining stable operation.
INNIO positions the J624 as suited to these requirements, citing its load-following performance and power density. The company also says the technology can reduce redundancy requirements compared with some alternative power-generation configurations. Redundancy is an important consideration for data center operators because facilities typically require resilient power systems to maintain operations during equipment maintenance or unexpected interruptions.
The use of gas engines for prime power can also provide data center developers with an alternative approach in markets where grid capacity is limited or where new electrical connections cannot be delivered within the desired project schedule. Rather than relying exclusively on the availability of additional grid infrastructure, developers can integrate generation capacity directly into their project plans.
